Belated Doctor Who Reaction Post!

I've been meaning to post some thoughts on Let's Kill Hitler for about a week now, so let's get on that...

First off... I am glad that Hitler himself wasn't actually a big part of the episode, but at the same time bringing him in for a pointless, gimmicky cameo was tasteless. :/ I don't object to pointless gimmicky cameos in general, and I don't even think that the Nazis should never be used in a humourous context (I find this Subnormality comic dealing with more or less the same concept pretty funny), but the way it was done... no. Just no. They could have made the plot work without him without much difficulty, I think.

That said, I'll acknowledge that Rory punching Hitler was awesome. xD And I thought the Teselecta was kind of clever. It reminded me of the numbskulls.

Overall I found it kind of messy. There was just so much stuff going on and so little of it was resolved. I'm mildly irked that Mels was never mentioned before, so for the sake of my own sanity I'm assuming this is because she actually wasn't a part of Amy and Rory's timeline prior to this episode. Hence the Doctor has never heard of her. :3 Makes much more sense.

It was very fun to watch, though, and my love for Alex Kingston just keeps on growing. Nina Toussaint-White as Mels reminded me just how irritatingly River is written, and yet somehow Alex Kingston never fails to make her awesome and loveable. <3 Also if I didn't have a crush on her before I do now. ;)

I have mixed feelings about Night Terrors. On the one hand I thought the idea was pretty inventive and the council estate setting was a nice change of pace from the last few episodes. I'm glad it ended up centering more around George's father than George himself, cause I was kind of :S about that child actor. I like that the twist actually made perfect sense - a lot of the time in Doctor Who episodes the set-up is ruined by a really badly thought-out resolution (*cough*Curse of the Black Spot*cough*). Also I loved Rory thinking he was dead. xD Oh, Rory. <3

And. Oh god. The dolls. o_o I dunno if I'd have got through this episode had I been watching alone. As it was I had to cuddle up with my friend the whole time cause it was so scary. D:

On the other hand... I don't like the way it was paced. I was really surprised when I checked the time and realised it was almost over because very little seemed to have been resolved. I think the ending was rushed and I really hope the Doctor intends to check back on that family at some point because I help but worry George might end up doing something like that again next time he feels rejected. Might be a while before he gets things under control.

Plus while the dolls was srsly creepy, they were not very inventively so. They were like textbook creepy - living dolls with no faces and jerky movements with children's laughter and singing playing when they move... yes that is very original. xD And the whole 'they touch you and you become one of them!' thing was done in The Empty Child.

I also think having Amy get doll'd did not have the desired effect. Up until then I'd been assuming it was fatal (or at least irreverisable) but was soon as they got Amy it was obvious they were all going to get turned back. The writers really ought to learn that no-one actually thinks they will kill of a major character in a non-arc episode (*cough*Curse of the Black Spot*cough*). It was still scary but I think it lost some tension there.

We also watched Tron Legacy (which was very pretty but probably confusing even without half a dozen people talking over it so I have no idea what happened), and Attack the Block, which was very easy to follow even when I didn't catch half the dialogue. xD It was most excellent and I'm planning to watch it again asap so I can actually pay attention to the scenes which weren't just aliens getting beaten up.

I baked white chocolate and pecan blondies yesterday and they are delicious. Very thoroughly reccommended. <3 Though they were yummier when they were raw. :P The batter was delicious. Mmm pecans.

And I have my list of required films for my Hollywood History course next semester. \o/ The combined price of the films were have to watch it aonly about £40 on Amazon (£30 not counting the ones available via the university website) - contemplating just buying them when my student loan comes in. Unfortuntely buying all the suggested films is considerably more expensive. :P On the plus side it includes The Lion King and 300, lulz. xD
