So, um. I am not going to mentioned how much of a sausage party this episode was. Except I did just now, so I guess that is out of the way.
The main thing I really liked about this episode: Merlin being silly with Arthur! Merlin being stupid and impulsive! Merlin being badass and proactive with his magic for once rather than just sitting and twiddling his thumbs while Gaius tuts at him! Merlin leading the knights to the tomb! Merlin being all Merlin-y!
And, well. I've been looking forward to this episode ever since I saw the dragon egg in the trailer at the BFI, I think it's an awesome idea and I'm so glad they gave Merlin a win. I was so worried it'd be a massive downer, especially after last week, but then askgjfndfkfdkgngl baby dragon so cute omg.
But. That said. Two main issues with this episode:
Firstly, I am sick of Gaius lecturing Merlin, cause yeah, he does stupid shit sometimes, but Gaius is in no place to rant about people doing stupid shit (he is to blame for what happened to Morgana, as far as I'm concerned) and he really should have been more understanding. Merlin is a dragonlord. Obviously he's going to find it very hard to resist being able to rescue the last dragon. Being all stern and eyebrowy and 'absolutely not' is not the way to talk him out of it (srsly, since when does forbidding Merlin prevent him from doing something? Gaius should know better by now). What with this and the pendant fiasco I am not liking Gaius this series.
Secondly... why is Aithusa a boy? I'm not sure why I am so bothered by this, but... story wise a female dragon would have made more sense as it would have allowed for potential future procreation and thus more dragons. A male dragon... means two dragons for a while and then no more dragons, which maybe is what the writers want since it's kinda-sorta-history so the dragons have to die out at some point, but idk if I think they put that much thought into it. I think they just defaulted to male. >_< This bothers me. I'm kind of hoping I misheard and Kilgharrah said 'she' but I don't think so. :/
