I totally agree. I used a camera extensively in the way you describe when I traveled around the world.

Also, this is controversial, but I believe that a "good" camera for this purpose has to easily fit in your pocket or purse.

I agree completely (and have updated the text). The camera needs to be attention-invisible (= usable while in a state of flow) which a fast & easily accessible camera is, but a bulky camera, or a slow camera, isn't.
