I have to be honest. Sometimes it's because there's a cat asleep on my arm. I can click and I can scroll, but words of any substance require both hands ( Read more... )

This is the most articulate reasoning for why I prefer Live Journal over Facebook. I need depth ... full sentences and complete paragraphs ... to fully explain what it is I feel and to explain my life most accurately. Maybe I over think and analyze my life too much. Sometimes it's so complex, I run and end of saying nothing. I have been accused of this, and maybe I do need to learn to be a LITTLE more succinct - compartmentalize thoughts and feelings for public consumption. However, I am oddly proud of my complexity, and I admit, sometimes it can paralyze me. I'd rather act after much thought instead of only 140 characters. For me, Twitter messages are only the title - not the body of my thoughts! And, Mr. Trump and his love of Twitter is showing how shallow he really is.

I remember reading an article shared on Facebook (!) about how the internet has deteriorated our attention spans because it bombards us with SO MUCH INFORMATION that, as Kate says, it's difficult to formulate any kind of thoughtful response. I think thoughtful responses can be formulated but it takes a lot of effort. And that's the issue -- most people don't want to make that type of effort. Places like LJ suffer as a result.

I agree. We have noticed that our son, who grew up in this "information age" (at least more than we did), is the worst communicator ever - both verbally and via technology. I think he's retreating -- moving into his shell for self preservation. Personally I think a lot of people are doing this. Humans can only handle so much stimuli.

I read way more than I comment for pretty much the same reasons, including the cat. *SQUISH*

I also get those random lj emails, but have never seen a "like" button on lj...

If I don't have something useful to say, I don't comment but I do read everything so I know what is going on. When the time comes, then I know what to say. I feel that way about my LJ, if you want to comment, great, otherwise, it is fine too.

The Like button is on the new layout, if you don't have it, you don't see the Likes. I turned off the emails. I have no use for it.

Really? Who liked my post? Which post did they like? What did they like about it?
Honestly, that is one of the most useless LJ features yet-- though I find it useless an annoying on Facebook, too. It's one of the reasons I don't spend any time there.

I loved the cobweb-in-the-corner analogy and dropping the candle. Life is just like that, sometimes.:O
