Hope?

If you mention the movie Oliver!, most people are probably going to think, "Please, Sir, may I have some more?" This, followed by a bunch of kids singing and dancing about being hungry. (That's ok. I grew up with musical theater, and over the years people have sung and danced through a lot of incongruous subjects.)

There's little cohesion in hate--that encourages me. That we point a camera at looters when a hurricane wrecks a city is disheartening, but there are people out there that will set up portable generators with which to charge the phones of stranded people who need to make phone calls is uplifting. The high school kids I teach want to strive for the best understanding and the best love between people that is possible regardless of how much fighting or cruelty they occasionally inflict on each other--this also heartens me.

I really liked how you used Oliver here. It's easy to forget the squalor of circumstances when everyone is dancing, but it's there, and it definitely does get overcome for the best.
