A poll....

So Matt's parents insist that calling your grandparents anything other than "grandma and grandpa" is a "southern thing" (said with disgust.) I take this as a swipe to my folks, who are "Nana and Pop" to my nephews and to my son. I myself called my grandparents "Nannie and Grandpa" and "Granny and Pa".

What do you call your grandparents?

I called my mom's parents Grandma and Grandpa. My Dad's parents were Grandma Chani and Papa Hy, but they were both gone by the time I was 4.

However, this whole "it's a Southern thing" is BS. My cousins from Brooklyn call their grandparents Nana and Zaydie. A girl I used to know had a Pop-Pop. When Adam and I have kids, my parents will be Grammy and Dadu (that was their request).

I called the grandparents that I was close with, Nana and Grandpa. The grandparents that we didn't see at all were Grandma and Grandpa. I think that names other than the originals aren't southern, they're just special. Kind of like, what does Matt call you? By your name or a pet name? That picture of the baby is gorgeous too! Oh and my kids call my parents Nana and PopPop...

Mine were Bubbie and Zaydei (Yiddish for Grandma and Grandpa).

My husband calls one set Ma & Pa, the other set is/was Grandma Reg and Papa Hank.

And this Southern thing business?...south of where exactly?

Matt's folks grew up in Connecticut and his mother hasn't quite adjusted that she's lived in Virginia 40 years now and in CT for 20. She still acts like she's a Connecticut person just visiting Virginia and putting up with us Yokels!

I knew I was right. Totally not a southern thing. Thanks for the backup!
