When I grow up I want to be...

First off, I finally changed the settings on my blog so my non-livejournal friends can comment.

As a kid I always knew the answer for the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" A writer! Of course.

When I hit my junior year of high school, I started getting into film. I love movies--sometimes better than books. (For example, I own every Harry Potter movie, but only one Harry Potter book. It's not that I don't love the books and haven't read them multiple times...it's just that I love the visuals and the experience of the movies, and have watched them more times than I have read the books.) I decided that I also wanted to be a screenwriter.
For my undergraduate degree, I ended up studying Humanities and Film. I did a lot with documentary film, and a lot with video editing--both things that I love, and plan to continue doing.

Then I did my graduate work-- a Masters of English with an emphasis in Rhetoric in Composition. I love teaching, and I have loved teaching people how to write, how to communicate--be it in emails, papers, and cultural or civic contexts. I love figuring out how language works and why.

All these things contributed to a more varied answer to the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

A writer, yes, I still want to be a writer. But I would also love to be a filmmaker. A teacher. Maybe an editor.

All these things are still true--I want to be these things when I grow up. And I've been coming to accept that I can want to be more than one thing when I grow up. And I may not be able to be everything, but I can tell a worthwhile, fulfilling story with my life.

There's something that has never been on the list of things I wanted to be when I grow up. That never even entered my imagination until a few weeks ago. But it's what I will be doing in 10 days time.

When I grow up (aka, in 10 days) I'm going to be a radio producer.

And I am so excited about it.

I'm going to be a producer for the program Thinking Aloud. You can get the podcast on itunes, listen to it on Classical 89 if you live in Utah, or listen to it online.

So what will I actually be doing?
  • Supervising between 2-4 students.
  • Producing 16 new Thinking Aloud episodes a month. (That's almost a new, developed story every work day.)
  • Helping with scripting and research. (Yes, interview radio programs have scripts--while open-ended, they're still scripts.)
  • Supervising technology and sometimes recording the show.
  • Helping recruit interviewees.
  • Tracking the show, it's reception and audience, and making plans for future progression of the show.
It sounds like so much fun, and brings together so many of my interests (writing, mentoring, technology, new media, storytelling, etc.)

It's a 3/4 position, has no benefits, and decent pay. Luckily my husband has a full-time job with benefits. I feel very blessed to get this job--something that I'm excited to work on every day, that's fulfilling, challenging, gives me learning opportunities, and the chance to work with cool people. And it starts right after I graduate. Also, it should give me time to work on other projects, or teach a writing class here and there.

work, life
