Just getting on my soap box for a moment

Oh man, so angry. I've been reading a lot about the local library closures recently. It's a bigger issue than I can get into on the last 10 minutes of my lunch break, but I just read this article in the Guardian and couldn't help but read the comments. I know, I know, I brought the anger on myself through my own thoughtless actions, but this is ( Read more... )

The real awfulness is how very few books my local library, in particular, has. While there are some fabulous libraries in Westminster, for instance (I have not belonged to a library in Kensington-and-Chelsea, or in Fulham, for more years than I care to remember), Lambeth libraries are singularly uninspiring. They have very few books in comparison with the number of DVDs, etc, and the non-fiction section has been merged with the reference section. We went and had a good look round last autumn, and were really not impressed.

Argh SO ANGRY about the whole thing. I keep thinking that it can't go on because surely EVERYONE thinks it's a bad idea but apparently not :(

Yeah, I really should have learned from your mistake and not read the comments on that article. It baffles me that people genuinely believe claptrap like that. I practically lived in the library when I was a kid. We couldn't afford to buy books willy-nilly, they were special treats, or presents, or bought with Christmas and birthday money, and we weren't on the poverty line or anything. And when I was older we used the library internet for about a year before we got a connection at home. Libraries really are the only way for some people to access books and facilities and other people need a good kick up their entitled backsides to realise that - and that librarians are as essential as the libraries.
