The Origin of Racism

Racism... where did it come from?
Did it come from a void, from a need to feel as though there is, in existence, a lower being?
Did it come from pure hatred, from bad experiences from which one judges an entire race?
Did it come from a misunderstanding, or a prejudgment of something completely foreign to our own personal existence?

I was recently talking about the second half of this with Charlotte. Certainly no one is born racist. I think it's going to continue to be a problem because we are taught about it in schools. Obviously we can't just throw out those whole sections of history books because we can't let history repeat itself. I think, though, that my first thoughts regarding racism resulted from being taught about slavery, etc. I think once the initial idea that it was once ok is planted in your mind...

"Because we feel as though we don't want to make them feel inferior, we sometimes wonder if we should let them off the hook."

Subconsciously it's always there, and is fed by older people who refuse to let go of their prejudices.

Prejudice MUST be fought from both sides. Like you said, the "race card" is still played. I agree that we should not agree to retry someone if they argue that the court was biased or something similar to that.

You always have interesting, thought provoking "updates". I'm glad you decided to keep writing a while back.

When I wrote about being taught to be racist, I actually didn't even think about learning it in schools. I meant more of being taught by your parents or grandparents, in a less formal setting. But I'm glad you mentioned that.

I'm glad someone actually reads what I write! I appreciate you commenting!
