Finally, an LJ that understands me! I'm going to try my best to keep my child's environment as gender neutral as possible when we finally pop one out. Some people just don't get that whole concept.

Yeah, this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine! Do you remember a few years ago when they had out a hot wheels computer for boys and a barbie computer for girls? The boys' computer had flames on it and the girls' had big ugly flowers but that was not the worst part - the boys' had math and science software while the girls' had barbie software (actually the article above was AFTER they updated the software package)! I don't even have kids and I still wrote angry letters to the manufacturer!

I hated dolls and all the girlie stuff as a child and asked for hot wheels when my grandma tried to buy dolls for me and I still hate it when things "for women" are made specifically all foofy or flowery or when people assume that we only do gender stereotypical things. I don't want kids myself but I always try to buy gifts for the kids in my life that are either creative like art supplies (I don't think kids use their imaginations enough now, I mean geez even legos come now with specific directions) or something like tools for girls.

Even the "updated" software is stereotypical with peoples' abilities. How come the boys get a social studies program (Oregon Trail) and the girls don't? I LOVED, LOVED that game as a child. No creative writing for boys? Way to hammer home the notion that boys can't/shouldn't express their feelings.
