Alcoholics Anonymous Open Meeting

My daughter here in the States is studying psychology. As part of this she had to attend, as an observer, an AA open meeting and I went along with her as I was fascinated to see what it was like, and as it was an open meeting I was allowed to be a "visitor ( Read more... )

I've know people who went through AA who have said the members of their group are closer than their own families, in terms of trust and respect. I know what you mean. That's exactly the feeling I got from those members. They were among the most sincere and friendly Americans either my daughter or I have met over here, and she's lived here five years. I really felt if I had a problem I could ring any one of them up and they would try to help me, even though they didn't know me. I was quite choked up by the time I left. What a fucking wonderful organisation.

And I agree that people can only be helped by them if they will admit they have a problem. That's the toughest part, getting somebody to admit they've got a problem and might need help.
