spent a few days in houston, and i'm having a great time, although i'm quite anxious to go back to school and meet all of the new freshmen and stuff

Mind you, I'm not hugely certain about your musical preferences (or the exact identity of some of these people... you should make sure that is a band called Karate and not just some martial artists doing a demonstration), but I can vouch firsthand for the Decemberists' ability to put on a really great show, if not for their actual presence at the venue. Of course, this is likely to be GBV's last tour (under that name at any rate), so if you haven't seen them (I haven't, so I couldn't tell you how good they are live), maybe you should. I've heard the Wrens are a good live band in theory, but can be uneven in practice... when they're on, they're great, but sometimes they'e not overly motivated and the show suffers.
If I still lived in Boston, I'd offer to maybe attend a show with you. Then you'd probably get kind of unnerved, because we don't actually know each other, and nobody wants to see music with strangers. Unless they do.
Now, if you wanted advice on stand-up comedy shows in Boston, then maybe I could give you more help...
i've heard from someone else as well that the decemberists put on a great show. so now i just have to hope that that's a real show and not just pollstar.com being silly.
i don't know the wrens well, but that show caught my eye because it is soon and before school starts.
i'm pretty scared of strangers. unless they have candy. i have a serious chocolate weakness.
stand up comedy would actually be a lot of fun. whenever i listen to things people recommend, i really enjoy it, but i've never found the motivation to try to find anything funny on my own. how much money would i be looking to spend for a humourous evening? i was going to tell you the name of this one guy i think is really hilarious to help you make suggestions, but i can't think of his name...
Old 97s, Cake, spoon, wilco, the roots, mindy smith, the pixies, ryan adams, dashboard confessional, modest mouse, howie day, sheryl crow, franz ferdinand. los lonely boys, patty griffin, blind boys of alabama.
those are the ones i know well.
Totally flying back to texas for that show/festival. (and for my dad's birthday too.)
though, if you're not gonna be in houston anymore, it prolly ain't as worth it.
I figured you'd be telling naiaha no thanks on the more expensive they might be giants to see Travis Morrison that night (aptly playing at the Plan, of all places), but I guess I see he's not so much on your mind anymore.
Actually, he is on my mind, and I've listened to all of the MP3s on his website, but my only adjective for them so far is interesting. Well, that and that part of checkers and chess makes me think of Bethany because she loves backgammon and dislikes checkers and chess. I don't like it quite as much as dismemberment plan though and I don't know how much fun it would be at a show... even though travis was pretty exciting in concert (the bassist was the best though, so maritime gets most of my dismemberment plan heart). I think they might be giants would put on a really fun show, although I'm not totally sure of course.
