OK- so Rob is working a night job now- 10pm to 6 am and he started Tuesday night and hasn't had a full 8 hours of sleep since then. I keep telling him to just go lay down in the bedroom in the dark with the tv on low and see if he can fall asleep- it worked tuesday before his first night- but since then- he is stubbornly trying to do stuff in the ( Read more... )

While I agree with you that it seems kind of unsafe to drive and work on not enough sleep, R. is an adult, and should be allowed to make those decisions on his own. Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep every night. Maybe if you drop it and let him decide for himself, he will be more likely to do what you want, when it's no longer a matter of winning or losing an argument. As childish as it may be, I know that when someone tries to control me and make me do something, it makes me dig in my heels and refuse to do it. It becomes battle of wills.

Maybe just present it like "It's up to you, but I am worried about you, because I think it's not safe to drive and do the kind of work you do when you haven't gotten enough sleep. I would hate for something to happen to you. Please think about it and consider trying to get more sleep. It would really make me feel better."

You are right- he is an adult and he was being stubborn because I was telling him what to do- but at the same time he was sagging and off balance with tired and also- some one totally grumpy and agitated in the middle of the living room makes it hard to do things- when he gets 5.5 hours I'm not bugging him- less than 4 and I know he needs more. And we haven't fought since that day about it- but it's a huge adjustment for both of us and if he doesn't make the effort to sleep during the day enough it means we both lose sleep and time and stuff. But yeah- pushing him when he's already grumpy and tired is a bad idea- but Hell- I was tired too.
