The JET community is often criticized for embracing the bottle a little too heavily. I know many JETs who have had this assumption made about them when it just is not true. The following came from an ALT in my prefecture. Hida is the Northern part of Gifu Prefecture and is where you will find Shokawa.

It's not just JETs. I've had the same experience with NOVA and W5. Everyone here seems to act like alcohol is the be-all and end-all of existence. I'm glad you're taking a stand against that (although honestly, that was pretty clearly a joke)

Unfortunately, I think it's the attitude of people in life in general, but as JETs are the "closest to home" so to speak with this attitude, it drives me crazy when the implication is that the POINT of an evening is to get good and drunk. Perhaps as someone who just doesn't drink at all, it's difficult for me to criticize with competence, but it's definitely something that immediately turns me off participating in events I otherwise might. I think it's different if it's a night out with friends, or if the gathering is already at a place where alcohol is likely to turn up anyway, but in this situation, when it regards something that, at least at face value should be treated as part of work, I don't think he should have made the suggestion in the way he did. It was completely unnecessary and just makes him look, to my mind, unprofessional, should anyone "official" see it.

Haha. Well, originally I was going to go by Kat but there was another girl named Kat in the area. She left the Hida area this summer.

No one wanted to use Katja. Ah well. ^_^

I've recently gotten frightened because alcohol no longer tastes so bad to me, so I've been drinking a lot more. A LOT more.

It's just as well that I have high tolerance. I still haven't gotten drunk yet.

Haha. Interesting. The point of the matter is that you do it responsibly and aren't just boozing it up with the ALT community.

Naw, I booze up with the Japanese instead.

But that has a practical purpose. XD
