This has been the worst evening of my life. So far. After 2 years of fighting cancer and entering remission twice, my best friend has been told that the most she can now do is prolong her life for awhile

I'm so sorry. I honestly can't tell you how to do this....*hugs* I would definitely suggest a support group because the only thing I can say is that this would be something almost impossible to handle alone. You said that Brayden is your godson. Does that mean you not only have to face losing your best friend but suddenly becoming a Mom as well? I don't know if you're already married and have kids or not, etc...but if that's a possibility, its not something you want to be surprised by. Even though I'm my niece's Godmother, my brother and SIL already discussed that if anything happened to them, that they would want Kaeli, my niece, raised by my SIL's brother and his wife as they have wonderful children already and are married, etc...while I'm single. It's important to know not only what your best friend wants, but to also do what's best for Brayden, no matter what you want as well. Loved ones dying of cancer or any other disease will always be one of the most sucktastic things that happens. I don't know how your BFF is dealing

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I won't pretend to have any answers for you. I hope that she is as comfortable as she can be, as free of pain as possible. I think the best suggestion I can give you is to seek ways to create as many good and positive memories as you can for all three of you (you, your friend, and Brayden). A month before my grandmother - also from cancer and too young, really, given how healthy she truly was - she and the family visited the Rhododendron gardens in San Francisco and took many pictures and one of them is currently framed in full, gorgeous color in my grandfather's home, four years later. Let her know how much she is loved and think of ways to create sparkling memories and ways to remember them (photographs, scrapbooks, journals, etc) for long into the future.
I am going to do the best I can to let her know that she will never be forgotten. It is especially hard, because I currently live in VA and she is in CO but I expect to be buying her a plane ticket to come out and spend some time out here and go back there as many times as I can.
You are right, it is all about making memories now.
I am so sorry. I know that does absolutely nothing for you really, but I just wanted you to know that the three of you are in my thoughts. And the only advice I can think to give you isn't really all that helpful at all, but in my own experiences I think in a way no matter how much you don't think you will be able survive something so big, it's almost like you go into autopilot and you actually find a lot more strength than you thought existed. I really am just so sorry.
It is nice to know that people understand and are supportive. I am so angry, so I think that is going to help me get through it. We also have no idea how long she will have. I just hope it is awhile.
Now, my goal is to make as many memories as possible.
It has been so eye opening through the last 24 hours how amazing the people I have found on LJ are. I am blessed to have so many "friends" here. I thought when I started this that I was just finding fun stories to read until I saw how much people shared their joys and sorrows with each other.
I appreciate so much everyone who has expressed their sympathy and understanding. Thank you so much for your thoughts.

She's lucky she has your love now, when she surely needs it most.
