I can't believe it! Obama won!! And by a landslide! I have never in my life been prouder of America than I was today. We did it. Yes we can. Thank God.
Very exciting, indeed, although I think people around here are already coming off the high of "Obama's magically going to make it all okay". I think it says a lot that both the Prime Minister and President made personal statements saying how happy they are Obama won. So yeah, definitely a big deal and I think just a huge relief for everyone; I for one don't know what I would've done had McCain won - lost all faith in all 300 million Americans, perhaps.
As Obama himself said, things aren't going to change over night and - let's face it - some things probably aren't going to change all that much full stop, but I do look forward to seeing Obama's policies in action.
Whether this has long-term effects on how we perceive the US remains to be seen. As it is, there's a curious mix of idolatry (you guys did invent McDonald's, after all) and loathing (see previous brackets) - we shall see if the balance will be tipped one way or the other.
