speaking as a postal carrier, let me clarify just a bit.
yes, postal rates will most likely go up every year. cost of gas is certainly a part of it. but, the major factor is that the government is now allowing us (the USPS) to operate at a PROFIT. in the past, if we needed to raise our rates, we had to go beg to some governing board. i dont think we have to do that any more.
Ugh. Thanks for posting this-- I had no clue, and my work requires me to mail stuff out. If I hadn't read this, I'd keep mailing things at 41 cents... and get a slew of returned mail because our post office loves to return mail. ;_;
Well, make sure the stamps are the forever stamps [the ones with the bell on it]. Even when the postage does go up, they will still be correct postage and not come back. I don't know what the other rates are going to be [like postcard and large envelope] but they do have a website - www.usps.com has lots of useful info on there.
Yeah, we've got some forever stamps at home... we use a mail machine at work that prints the postage. Which is why I have to remember the amount, before I punch in the wrong one... ugh! :P
