NAME: Katniss Everdeen

FANDOM/MEDIUM: The Hunger Games (book)
CANON PULL-POINT: Katniss will be pulled from The Hunger Games, towards the end of the games when there is only Peeta, Katniss and Cato are still alive. The mutatations have just begun to chase them. At this point she is deaf in her left ear and in possession of a bow and seven arrows.
ABILITIES: Katniss is a highly skilled hunter and trapper. Life in District 12 is harsh with starvation being the most common cause of death in the lower classes. Katniss’ family survived as dad used to go outside the boundaries of the town to hunt and he took Katniss with him. Out in the woods he taught her archery so that she would be able to shoot prey. She also learned from him and later from her friend Gale who to set snares and traps ando walk softly so that prey would not be startled off.
When he died, Katniss was skilled enough to hunt in the woods and provide for her family. The weapon she hunted with was a bow and she was an expert with it. Sehe brought her prey down with a single arrow through the eye; during the pre-judging for The Hunger Games, she scored an 11 out of a possible 12 after she demonstrated her skill with the bow.
The woods around the districts could be dangerous, as a result Katniss learned to climb trees. She has no fear in the trees and is very good at judging what weight a branch could handle. During the Hunger Games, Katniss was able to climb higher and faster than the Career Tributes which saved her life more than once.
Her life was also saved by the knowledge her Father and her mother taught her about poisonous and medical plant life in and around District 12. She is able to perform basic first aid as a result of watching her Mother, and to survive in the wild on the fruits, nuts and roots found in the wild.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
Katniss is not the most socially adept person. She does not know how to read people. She is surprised when Gale declares his feelings for her as she had thought that they were just friends. Later, when Peeta does the same, she does thinks that it is being staged and again is unwillingly to accept that people would love her. Also, during the lead up to the Hunger Games and during the games themselves she does not know how to reach out and interact with people. Before she speaks she analyses everything inwardly and is careful about what she gives and shares of herself with people.
When her Father died, her mum went into a deep depression and was not able to focus or take care of the family, and Katniss learned that she could not depend on anyone but herself so she saw it as herself against the world. She does not accept easily from people as she looks for the hidden motive behind it; and when she does accept the help, she always remembers what they did for her and does not feel comfortable with them until she has a way to pay them back. When they were younger Peeta had deliberately burned bread when he saw that she was starving so that he could give it to her rather than letting it be sold in the bakery.
None of this means that Katniss does not have feelings or care deeply about people. She is fiercely protective of her sister Prim and loves her dearly. With Prim, she is able to hug and do thoughtful things like get a ribbon (Which is a large extravagance) to go around a ghost’s neck for a present and volunteers to take her place in the arena. In the arena she teamed up with a young girl Rue, and when she died she placed flowers around her so that her death would be peaceful.
Katniss is strong, stubborn and determined. When she was younger, she learned to hunt in the woods because she was determined that her family wouldn’t starve. Once she set out to do this, she would stop at nothing. It was the same in the arena, when the rules were changed so that two tributes could win, she stopped at nothing to heal Peeta from his wound so they could both leave the arena.
WORLD:
Katniss’ comes from a future version of our world, after the world as we know it has come to an end, and earth has broken and changed it’s shape. Out of this has risen a new kingdom called Panem. Panem is based in what was once known and is divided into Thirteen districts and the main Capitol. The Capitol is seperated from the districts by the Rocky Mountains which made it safe from attack. The Capitol kept the districts in poverty, fencing the districts in for their own protection. Eventually the districts rebelled against them and went to war on the Capitol. For every Capitol citizen that died, two rebels died. As the Capitol was well protected they quelled the rebellion, and destroyed the Thirteenth District completely.
Once the rebellion was quelled, the Capitol established the Hunger Games, an annual event in which which twenty-four children between the ages of twelve and eighteen, one boy and one girl from each district, are chosen from a lottery and entered into a Battle Royale competition where they must fight each other to the death until only one remains standing. The event serves as reminder that the Capitol has complete control over the districts and could obliterate the remaining districts at any point. In the Capitol it was seen as entertainment were the wealthy betted and sponsored the children ‘tributes’ and watched the events happily on television. Watching the Hunger Games was compulsory in the Districts.
Each of the Districts makes luxury and every day items for the Capitol. In District 4 they are the fishing Disctrict and provide seafood to the Capitol. In Katniss’ District 12, they have mines to provide the coal for the Capitol. The citizens do not get to keep any of the coal and it is shipped by train to the Capitol. They are kept fenced in and the electricity only comes on for a few hours a day though it runs perfectly during Capitol broadcasts and the Hunger Games. The poor like Katniss live in the Seam, and many people die of starvation. They live on the rations that the Capitol allow them. As mentioned Katniss hunts, but she could be whipped for this on a daily basis if the authorities decided to act on it.
OCCUPATION: Katniss will be a hunter, it is what she knows best.
SAMPLES
THIRD PERSON: The wagons had stopped for the night and had formed the nightly circle. Katniss sat in her wagon with her bow across her lap looking at the people moving around the campsite. She has noted the ones who carry guns and other weapons and kept a close eye on them. It was impossible not to think that this was some trick of the Capitol and this was just another part of the games. What she is not sure of is why they aren’t attacking her yet.
Her good ear is turned towards the campfire as she cannot hear anything out of her left ear. If possible she feels even more vulnerable than she was inside the original arena. Katniss pinched herself as her eyes began to droop; she couldn’t afford to fall asleep here. When everyone else had gone to sleep she would find a tree to go and sleep in.
FIRST PERSON:
[Katniss turned to look back and saw the mutations were gaining on them, and sped forward faster. As she turns her head back to face the Cornicopia, she finds herself falling of a wagon. She stands up quickly and looks wildly around her. Where was Peeta, and Cato? One was an enemy and one was important to her but she needed to know where both of them were.
She was tired of the games, so she swtiched on the communiator that had been strapped to her wrist. Her eyes darted as she looked at the screen. Her face is smudged with dirt and soot.]
Hello? My name is Katniss Everdeen. [She took a deep breath] Peeta if you can hear me please reply. To everyone who is not a mutation, please...I need to know the rules of this new Game. They weren't explained to me.
[She believes she is in a new arena. She knows she is going to appear weak but she needs the information if she is going to survive. ]
NOTES: Katniss will enter the arena with her bow and arrows, she won’t have any other supplies as these were left behind at the lake when they began to run from the mutations.
