Tennant-Fest Continues - Blackpool, Einstein & Eddington, and Recovery

Jan 04, 2010 08:53

As a relatively recent and clearly fanatical convert to the awesomeness that is David Tennant, I’ve been scrambling to get my hands on all DT’s works to date. Thanks to the fabulous buffyaddict13 who so kindly sent me copies, I got to see Blackpool, Einstein & Eddington, and Recovery this week! Add in Hamlet and Doctor Who: End of Time in the same week and I’m ( Read more... )

dude, you've been busy. i LOVE your reviews. *clings*

For now, let me just say, Blackpool is fucking awesome!

GLEEEE! isn't it though? and how weird is it that you end up liking ripley? i loved him so much that now when i watch "the next doctor" i love it 23 times more because in my head i think THAT'S RIPLEY AND CARLISLE TEE HEE. :D

in fact, i kind of love all the characters, but i have a soft spot for ripley's daughter and her older boyfriend (blanking on names right now.)

and recovery makes me ball every time. :-( i don't know the song from it, but if you ask on tennant_love i bet they can help you.

i also thought dt was wonderful in einstein and eddington. and DITTO on the woman who played his sister. i loved their relationship, but then i'm a sucker for siblings.

thank you so much for taking the time to write these reviews. *clappyhands*

Thank you so much, sweetie!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the reviews!

I was up all night rambling these. lol I shudder to calculate the hours I've spent either watching or writing about DT this week as opposed to you know actually doing anything else at all. Pfft, who needs a life anyway!

I owe you so big time for Blackpool, because even just thinking about it now fills me with indescribable giddy glee. It should be illegal to have that much fun watching something, and as I live in the South, it probably is here. I'm totally going to have to rewatch The Next Doctor now for the Ripley & Carlisle squee.

Blackpool is a musical?

Einstein and Eddington sounds interesting.......

Yup, Blackpool is a musical. Only, the songs are more integrated, they're pop songs, and the original singer(s) are singing them with the cast singing quietly as well. I know it sounds totally cracky, and it is, but somehow it not only works, it is awesome! LOL

Einstein & Eddington is pretty neat. It's a fairly short, quiet little period film, but the writing's pretty decent and the performances are quite good even beyond DT.

I wish America would do something simular to it since Glee has made the music based medium on television popular again.

They did. CBS attempted in 2007. It was called Viva Laughlin and was cancelled after only two episodes.

As for Hamlet...lots of love to be found in tennant_love. Check the older posts from just after Christmas. *wink*

I'm curious about Viva Laughlin. Did you actually see it? I remember hearing about it at the time but didn't pay it much mind. Was it canned so quick because it couldn't find a US audience (if anything like Blackpool, I expect it would be a hardsell here), or was it just that bad?

Welcome!

I never expected to like Blackpool, much less love it the way I do. It just makes me laugh and laugh. At the same time, I can totally agree about the characters. Every one of them are bastards of varying degrees and fashions. I don't really like them, but I love them. Know what I mean? I kind of have a thing for flawed characters, though.

The song thing is so funny, and I'm right there with you. I don't think I can ever hear "The Boy with a Thorn in his Side" again without lapsing in to extreme laughing fits. I would have completely embarrassed myself at that bar if I'd been in your shoes.

Ooo, thank you so much for the Casanova link!!

I got Hamlet through tennant_love. There were a couple posts of it right after Christmas. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll try to backtrack to the link for you.

[here from tennant_love]

'Blackpool' is so much love. I am a lifelong 'Doctor Who' fan and David really stole my heart as the Tenth Doctor, but despite all that, at the end of the day, Peter Carlisle is definitely my favorite character I've seen David play. Like you, I wasn't too sure about the whole musical thing, but they made it work and it all turned out so unique and wonderful. And 'Boy With a Thorn in his Side'? Yeah, so hilarious. Especially when poor David messes up. Bless ( ... )

Welcome!

I agree completely with everything you said re Blackpool, E&E, and Recovery! <3

Blackpool is my new favorite pick-me-up. Peter Carlisle is so much love! And the whole thing just gets me smiling and laughing like nothing else I've ever seen.

This film was so sweet and poignant with a lovely intensity boiling under the surface. You sum up E&E perfectly! I, too, really enjoy seeing DT in quieter roles like E&E and Learners (just saw that one and will probably get a review up sometime next week). I wish those had more visibility. I never would have known they existed, much less found them, without doing some digging and getting help from fellow fans. I only heard about Last September through recent comments, and I'm still looking for that one ( ... )
