"Why?"

His voice sounded thick and his throat was dry and raw with emotion. He swallowed down all of the burning fear and met the opposing dark eyes with his own. "Why do you want me here?"

He gestured around to the house that was catching fire from the last few drops of the sun as it sunk into the hills, signaling a new night. Except for the two of them it was empty, nothing but the hum of that one light in the kitchenette surrounded them after the silence absorbed his words. It wasn't so much that he was talking about the property itself; instead he was talking about the barren family- a father and his daughter. A daughter who had left moments before to go to a house that functioned- that had a mother, a father, a daughter, and even a cat.

If Adachi could he would have likened himself to that cat; coming and going but never staying in one place for too long in fear of being scooped up and showed attention.

He didn't belong here; this makeshift family could only support the hectic lifestyle of Dojima, and the frayed but holding strong support of his daughter. He'd be the flame that licked away at those ends until the support gave way- he'd kill them both.

If Dojima had an answer he kept it to himself, and instead watched Adachi as he paced back and forth in the small space he allowed himself right in front of the calendar. The last rays of light specked in his hair and on his chest with the constant movement.

“I would have preferred you finding me disgusting… Hating me…” The pain was naked on his face, and Dojima could do nothing but feel sick as he watched the poison seep into his ex-partner’s chest and being eating away at him again.

He wanted to speak, but if his job had taught him anything it was that times like this required silence as the other person sorted themselves out. Adachi was not talking to him at that moment; he was watching the film in front of his eyes in a place that Dojima could not see. He finally stopped, his eyes downcast but his stance voiced that he was ready for the struggle.

“You can’t want me to stay.” He concluded, unable to look anywhere from the ground where the dust danced in the air.

“But I do.” Dojima finally answered, bracing himself for the argument sure to follow.
