Title: A Winter Promise
Pairing: Hikanoo (Hikaru x Inoo)
Summary: It’s winter and it’s Christmas, and the happy season suddenly turns into a nightmare that Hikaru cannot forget.
A/N: I was listening to Tegomasu’s ZUTTO non-stop, and I promised my friends I will write something Hikanoo since people rarely write about them now. My OTP must not die. <3 *waves at
just_mine23 * I miss you. :D
Small flakes of snow started to fall from the sky as Hikaru stood on the street of Shibuya. Two days to go and it would already be Christmas. He looked around him and saw smiles on people’s faces and the entire place is filled with Christmas related decorations and lights. All shops are adorned with greetings and lots of interesting stuffs to buy. Such a happy occasion, yet he doesn’t feel like he’s going to have a nice Christmas this year.
If it’s about family, everything’s fine. His brother called last time saying he’ll bring his wife and baby along to celebrate with them. That means they’ll be a complete family on the special event. However, if it’s about his heart, deep inside him, it’s so empty. The snow that gently landed on his palm melted… and like a tear trailing down on his skin. Like the tears he had been shedding ever since the person he loves passed away. As cold as the nights he had to endure for almost a year now.
I guess I lied when I promised you I’ll be happy even if you’re gone.
“Hikaru, you’ll get cold. Why are you just standing there?”, a girl of same age as him wrapped her arms around his. She has a bright smile, short wavy black hair draping on her small shoulders and her eyes are sparkly.
Her face would always remind him of the person he was trying to forget. Or maybe, he chose her because he never wanted to forget that person. He forced a smile, something the girl wouldn’t notice anyway.
“Did you buy the dress?”, he asked in a cheerful voice.
Ayu shook her head and pouted.
“I thought you will buy it?”
“How would I know if it looks good on me? You did not join me inside.”
“I’m enjoying the snow.”
“You always love the snow. I’m so jealous.” Ayu’s tone was sarcastic. Hikaru poke his finger on her rosy cheeks.
“Stop. It doesn’t fit you.”
They both giggled, and then continued walking hand in hand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Can I kiss you?”
Before Hikaru can answer the sudden question, Kei’s lips are already touching his own. He let out a soft moan when Kei moved his lips more. Recovering from the shock, he started to move his lips too. They shared a very passionate kiss under the starless sky.
“You brat. I did not allow you yet.” Hikaru joked when their lips parted.
“I knew you’ll say yes.”
“Then you shouldn’t have asked it.”
Kei snickered and stole another kiss from him. “Hikaru, you taste like cherry.”
“We ate ice cream a while ago… with a cherry on top.”
“Oh, next time, I’ll put you on top of my ice cream.”
Soon enough, the two stood up from the grassy ground just as the snow started to fall. Their Christmas date is going according to their plan. They both love the sight of snow, those little white little crystals swaying on the thin air… it’s beautiful.
Hikaru on the other hand, thinks Kei who’s happily watching the snow is more beautiful. It has always been their habit to have a date on a Christmas night. And every time they had to walk back home after the date, it would snow. Until they got used to it, and the snow feels like a silent witness of to their warm relationship.
Kei lifts his hand with palms facing the sky… His well-shaped fingers curled up trying to catch those white crystals. He giggles when he opens his hand realizing that he can’t hold them. Hikaru thinks his boyfriend is crazy, but this is how he came to like him. That very childish grin… That playful aura around him.
“I love it when it snows.”
Hikaru uttered a silent “Why?” even if he’s not really interested to hear his explanation, because he’s pretty sure Kei would just make a funny remark.
“When I was kid, my mom buys me lots of jackets and scarf during winter coz I easily get sick on cold weathers.”, Kei stops speaking for a while to cuddle on Hikaru’s arms, “but when it snows, mom hugs me so tight, and it feels so warm.”
They continued walking along the brightly-lighted pathway at the park, Hikaru’s hand clutching on Kei’s side.
“Being this close to you is the warmest.”
“Really?” Hikaru smiles at the compliment. Though deep inside him, there’s this sudden slash of pain breaking his heart slowly for unknown reason. Then he tugged Kei closer, placing a light kiss on the boy’s forehead.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It happened so fast.
A kid, around 9 or 10 maybe, ran across the street to chase his puppy that escaped from his arms. And before he knows it, Kei was hurrying behind the kid and pushes him towards the sidewalk as a huge delivery truck approaches them.
A loud shriek fluttered in the air coming from the young lad. People gathered around the lifeless body lying on the cold pavement, blood spreading on the white snowy ground.
“It wasn’t my fault. He appeared in front of me.”, the truck’s driver reasoned out to all of them who’s looking at him with hatred.
Hikaru kneeled down beside the lifeless body.
That which was Kei’s.
Pale skin as white as the snow, they looked identical to each other but Hikaru recognizes the one which he’ll always find more beautiful. He embraces him. He kisses him. And he cried.
“Kei… Does this feel warm?”
“Un…”
“You’ll stay with me right? You’re not dying… right? Kei. Please…”
“Hikaru---“, Kei’s voice sounded weak. There was not a trace of playfulness anymore. “Promise me.... you’ll be happy even if I’m gone… ok?”
Hikaru did not respond. Instead, he carries him with all his might and pushes through the crowd. He’s bringing him to the hospital no matter what. His mind tells him he can run to the hospital. Though everything is blurry now, and he feels so lost.
He stumbled; both of them fell on the ground again. The snow’s coldness creeping through his shoes and coat. Hikaru sobbed on Kei’s shoulder, finally giving up on his aim.
“Pro----mise, Hikaru?”
Hikaru nodded again and again, hugging him tighter.
“I promise. I promise. I love you, Kei.”
I still have lots of dreams to share with you. There’s just so many things I want to thank you for. I still want to spend more days with you. The promise that I want to tell you is to stay with you forever, and love only you for the rest of my life. Live together, laugh together. You and me…
Words unspoken remained unspoken. When Kei’s breathing stopped, Hikaru’s world collapsed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light pat on his cheeks woke Hikaru up. His eyes slowly opened to see an annoyed face Kei and a laughing Yabu looking down at him on the bed. He closed them again to verify what he have just seen.
“Hikaru! Stop pretending you’re asleep. We’ll be late for our group meeting!”, Kei nudged him again, “Oii, wake up!!!”
“Oh my god… it was all a dream…”, Hikaru sighed with relief.
He got up and gave Kei a very bright smile.
“What? Why are you looking at me like that? Have you fallen in love with me or something?”
“Idiot.”
“Ok. I’ll be waiting for the two of you in the rehearsal room. The other members are there already”, Yabu stated leaving them in silence.
“Come on Hikaru. Don’t try to tell me you dreamt of me dying just to please me for waking up late.”
Hikaru snickered. He’s happy that everything was just a nightmare. Kei is in front of him now, alive and as usual, noisy. He hates the nightmare, but it made him realize something though.
Kei spreads the curtain open and gasped in awe. He wiped the fogged window glass, staring at the scenery outside.
“I love it when it snows.”
