Prompt: Captain Hero learning how to fly (penguingirl03)
Words: 1142
Universe: canon Alphabetia, during mid/late adulthood of generation B
Warnings: none

I've had a bit of trouble concentrating for longer than a few sentences at a time in the evenings. But apparently a few sentences at a time still eventually leads to a piece. So here's my second one. I considered cutting the beginning - I kind of started too early it feels - and if this was in a chapter I think I would. But since it's not and since I already wrote it, I figured I'd let it be.

"Bruenig? The boss wants to talk to you." It was one of the newer officers, smiling apologetically.

Marsha sighed. She wouldn't really have had the time, but when your boss wanted you, you arranged for it. "Thanks, Greene. Could you please tell him I'm free?"

But it wasn't just the boss. It was what seemed like half the department who squeezed in through her door. Greene handed her some flowers and chocolate. Marsha was utterly baffled. Today wasn't in any way special, right?

"Well, Bruenig", said her boss, unable to hide a wide grin. "I've got some news for you, and it seems that since I had to tell someone at the office so the paperwork could get done, I couldn't stop your coworkers from doing this little surprise for you. Clearly you've got a lot of friends here. Actually, I'm told you have a lot of friends everywhere."

"Well, anyway", he continued, smiling wider all the time. "What I was supposed to tell you... Remember that application you left three, four months ago?"

For a moment Marsha couldn't fathom what he was talking about. What application? Then, as the boss was done with his creative break, it started dawning to her.

"Well, the competition was tough, it always is, but in the end... You were chosen. You're our newest Captain Hero."

The next half an hour was pretty incredible. It was the moment Marsha had been dreaming of, and somehow it was even better than she had imagined it. Heartfelt congratulations were raining on her. She passed her chocolates around, someone had made coffee. A regular day at the office had just turned into a small party.

Just as everyone was getting ready to get back to the last few tasks of the day before heading home, the boss approached Marsha again. "Oh, one more thing, Bruenig. You should leave whatever you had left to do for tomorrow. Right now there's something more important for you to do." He grinned again. "And more fun."

"You know, I never really thought about this part", Marsha commented as she found herself walking outside with two senior Captain Heros, Evelyn and Matt. They were in an inner yard of the police station, a space that was mostly used for fitness training. "I mean, that you have to take lessons for it and all. But of course, it makes sense."

"Well, I wouldn't say 'lessons', not in plural anyway", said Evelyn, smiling. "I'm sure you'll get the hang of it today."

"Really?" asked Marsha, astonished.

"I'd be quite surprised if you didn't", said Matt, as he stopped in the middle of the yard. Marsha and Evelyn did the same. "It's really quite simple. Now lets see. Evelyn got you the suit already. Are you sure it fits right?"

Marsha looked at herself and moved about. "I think so, yeah. It feels comfortable." Other than perhaps making her feel slightly ridiculous, it really did.

"Good. Because that's really essential", Matt said. "The suit is designed to for this, and actually, it'll do most of the work for you. You see this little switch here?" he pointed at a small, button-like something on Marsha's right shoulder.

"Yeah?"

"That's what activates the suit. Like this." Matt pressed the little switch, and Marsha felt a slight vibration as the suit powered up. It was an odd sensation. Almost as if she could do anything.

Marsha got to try switching the suit on and off herself a couple of times, and it was simple enough. Matt explained some of the handy functions of the suit, a couple of quick escape procedures and a few secret weapons. Then it was Evelyn's turn.

"Alright, the best part: flying. Quite simple", she said. "First, make sure the suit is on. Then, bend your knees and crouch just a little bit", Evelyn continued and demonstrated by taking the position herself, "Get ready and push up, hard. Most find it the easiest if they try to strectch out as far a possible, become as tall as possible." She stood up straight, lifting an arm and reaching for the sky with a clenched fist.

"When you're up, you can direct your movement simply by leaning the way you want to turn", Evelyn said, demonstrating still. She then went on to describing adding and reducing speed, both sounded simple enough. "Then, to land, you can simply direct yourself towards the ground, speed up a little but not too much, and when you're getting close, spin around so you're facing the sky again, and take the landing position. The suit will recognize that you're landing and adjust your speed accordingly. When you touch the ground, remember to relax your muscles and bend at the knees so it goes softly. And that's most of it, really. Now, would you like to try it for yourself?"

Of course Marsha did. She was slightly confused with all the instructions, but this was something she'd been looking forward to for longer than she could remember. She couldn't wait a moment longer.

Instructed by Evelyn step by step, Marsha powered up her suit again, then took the takeoff position.

"And don't worry", said Matt, "if anything goes wrong, this yard is a safe environment in the first place, and me and Evelyn are both experienced fliers, so we can come to your aid if needed."

"Alright", said Marsha and nodded.

"Okay then", said Evelyn, "now just push up, as if you were jumping. You need a bit of force, but this first time take it a bit lightly so you don't speed very high. When you've got a bit of altitude, you can try a few circles to test the behavior of your suit."

Marsha nodded again, then did as she was told. She pushed up from the ground, as if jumping, and straightened up, lightly. And to her amazement, it didn't feel like jumping at all. Or, at first it did, but then, when she would normally have reached the highest point and started falling, she kept rising, steadily, as if in an elevator. It was pretty incredible.

"Good, that's high enough for now", called Matt from the ground when Marsha had risen clearly above his and Evelyns heads. "You could try circling around a bit next."

Marsha found that she was able to stop and float at where she was. She turned to her right, and flew forward, first slowly, then, as she felt more confident, with increasing speed. She zoomed about, circled around Evelyn and Matt, heard their approving voices. They were right: it was easy. The suit was amazing, almost as if she operated it directly via her thoughts. She tried a few new patterns, a couple of twirls. As she went for her first dive and felt the thrill, she knew.

It really was a dream come true.
