My mom's parents live in Biloxi, and most of my mom's family lives in Gulfport Mississippi. The house that my grandpa built for my grandma on the bayou has most likely been reduced to several pylons that made up the carport.
Yeah. I mean, hurricanes are just a part of the culture down there. If your important shit isn't in a flood-proof box on a shelf in the closet, well, you're just silly. All of my dad's history was destroyed by Camille in '69, and you just move on. But knowing that the house that is as much a part of my family as anyone down there is just gone. I can't quite wrap my brain around it.
How do this many people go about rebuilding all at once? Or will there be a mass exodus out of the area because it will take so long to rebuild they all have to find alternative homes anyway? It would seem resources are going to be so stretched they're non-existent.
arg, nature! I hope your loved ones are safe and fairly dry tonight. it's a sobering thought, to spend years of life building something special, only to be ripped away from it, and realize that it may be gone.
Everyone's okay, but Eagle Point (the house on the water) is gone. There are seven feet of water in my uncle's old house, and only three inches in the new one. I haven't gotten any word from my other uncle's family, but they were farther inland and are most likely okay.

I cannot even begin to imagine how everyone begins to restore their lives.
