Very well thought-out and said! And yes, alas, the field is a bit crowded. Actually, it's a whole lot crowded, much of it derivative and/or awful. (which makes it sound like I read a lot of it, but I don't - I've been burned too many times. It's hard to resist a vamp story, but I've been disappointed too many times.)

Give your readers wonderful, relatable characters and let the supernatural chips fall where they may. Or may not. :)

I agree that compelling, relatable characters (not just the main characters, but sidekicks and villains too) are an important construct in any story.
