i'm planning on taking a lot of graphics courses next year in grad school as electives (even though i'm going for molecular and cellular biology). i want to be a science art director for a magazine or books or something.
check out greenfield cc. i think they have graphics classes at night, so you could work during the day, which is a great thing to do.
thanks! i've been looking at hcc and gcc... and they both have good options, albeit the offerings at each are a bit different from each other (hcc seems to focus on more of the "elements of design" and more of the basics, while gcc seems to focus more on technology and offers classes in 3d. ideally i'd like to combine a few classes from each, but i guess community colleges aren't cool like mhc, so you can't create your own curriculum. ooooooooh well. :)
one question for now... i actually already have dreamweaver, and i love it... so i'm wondering what's replacing it? and flash... ooh, i can't wait to learn flash. (i'm learning css in my spare time now... it's neat).
so much has changed and progressed since html 1.0. i mean... damn. it's awesome. :)
p.s. tablets? if i'm getting a mac and the adobe software, should i go ahead and get a tablet? it's pretty essential... right? what do i need? do i start small or will i just need a bigger one later? dah, i know very little about them.
I have a buddy who is in graphic design for marketing and advertising, he and his mother run a small business down here I can get you in touch with him if you would like more pointers but Absinthetic pretty much said it all.
Surely you know Ellie (what works at faces). She went to school for graphic design, maybe she could lay some wisdom on you. This is a good area for that kind of thing, even if there aren't any schools to teach it.
"Lots of people" leads directly to "lots of jobs." Although it may lead to a glut on the market and make it less-than-profitable, it will insure that you have lots of interesting projects to work on!
What kind of equiptment do you need? Pardon if I'm stuck digital - all of the graphic design I ever do only requires photoshop and my tablet. ;)
i love photoshop... but i also want to get into more hardcore stuff with illustrator, and learn flash and all the necessary rot of webdesign. i've just been craving a mac since i started working on them in college (not to mention it's crappier to do digital film editing on a pc... and that's something else i want to be able to work on).
i built my pc in 2001. it's a bit outdated. the new equipment i'm hoping to finance is a mac. oh, and i'd kill to get a tablet too. yay tablet.

but online graphics classes seem hard if you don't already have the equipment... wah wah.
and does "good area" mean "lots of jobs" or "lots of people who do graphic design"?
