Gintama 38

Since the current episodes continue to be Katsura-less, a look at one of the old ones, which happens to be seasonally appropriate.

Episode title: Only Little Kids Get Excited by the Snow
Source of subs: Rumbel

Episode summary:

Abnormal amount of snow does nothing to damp the spirits of the Kabuki town residents - they decide to organise the First Kabuki Town Snow Festival, with snow sculpture contest.

The Yorozuya participate, of course. Shinpachi thinks that Gin-san and Kagura are making an extremely indecent sculpture, while in fact...

Madao also participates, and surprisingly, he recognises the Neo Armstrong Jet Cyclone Armstrong cannon right away. Madao’s snow sculpture is really impressive, so the envious Kagura and Gintoki destroy it, and steal some ideas for their work.

Katsura arrives, and he also recognises what Gin-san’s statue is supposed to be.

‘Also known as the „Running Lightning”. A hellish weapon that created the „Fire of Seven Days” in the Balkan War.”

Katsura also participates in the contest, although for recreational purposes, not for the prize.

His creation is something unexpected...

Once again, Kagura and Gintoki get envious and destroy Katsura’s work.

Sa-chan appears, and her statue is in the likeness of Gin-san. Unfortunately, she breaks the statue’s arms off when she tries to fit herself in the statue’s embrace.

And then there is Otae and the snow thing her bar made is really huge and impressive, so that Kagura and Gin-san are totally embarrassed at the result of their work. It’s almost definite that the main prize will be theirs...

But Madao and Katsura snap because of the destruction of their works and smash all the other statues.

Everything turns into a huge snowball fight, but since it’s all fun, that’s a nice end for a festival.

Comments about this:

Katsura does have warm winter clothes, after all! He was even wearing gloves and a scarf. Still, he should be wearing proper boots too, for a change - those Japanese sandals and socks probably are useless against snow and cold.

But then again, he probably can’t do that, boots would mess with his traditional image and style... Katsura-san is a martyr for style!

Also, he is quite artistic! He built such an interesting interactive snow sculpture! Well, he was not alone, we can assume that his helpers were some guys from the Joi faction, since they were also in traditional clothing and didn’t look like yakuza from Kabuki town. But even if he did not build it single-handedly, the design of the statue is, without doubt, his idea - who else could come up with something like that!

The design is actually rather interesting - what does the slide mean? Katsura is thinking of the kids? Or, more likely, he is a child at heart himself, so he build a statue according to his own preferences regarding what a good way of spending time is...

It’s interesting that he chose this sort of festival as a recreational activity. Apparently, it’s not all work and no play for Joi patriots, if he has time for something like that. Because none of what he did there was even remotely connected to Joi and he didn’t even mention them once.

I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him in the end - his hard work was destroyed by other people’s petty jealousy, and he decided to take revenge on the society... This is somehow a reflection of his actual Joi activities, isn’t it? And a reflection of his personality - the thing that bothered him most was that there was nobody who would want to use his slide, so for him doing something for other people is what’s the most important.

Any thoughts?
