I'm just going to second a lot of what is said here. While Katsura is (in)famously known for being nuttier than a squirrel's winter hoard, this is the episode that defines his actions and character development in later episodes and arcs. To see how he's changed, look at episodes 13, (Captain Katsura!), episode 15 (Elizabeth) 17 (Takasugi's intro), 24, 39, the Benizakura arc and last but not least, the Renhou arc. Even then though, you can really see him warming up more to people and making more of an effort to understand the new times and value his life (He still fails at it, but you can't doubt his sincerity
( ... )
nuttier than a squirrel's winter hoard That description really made me lol irl XD That's right, if you analyse these episodes, it's obvious that Katsura has character development and clearly he tries to change and become a better person, and that is just one of the reasons why I admire him!
That's a really great way to put it! It definitely looks like Katsura was ready to sacrifice his life and use whatever means necessary, but Gin-san showed him that living peacefully can also be a way to change things.
He's exactly what Japan needs to move forward without taking a step backward culturally because that would destroy Japan's identity. Wow, that was really well said! I love when people refer to him like that, it really captures the feelings of hope that people invest in him, and you perfectly defined why exactly Katsura is the kind of leader Japan needs.
I am excessively fond of him after all, so anything that shows a side of him to be admired is a plus! In my mind, what Katsura is doing now is moving with the times without sacrificing his ideals. He used to think that doing both was impossible but Gintoki showed him how you can change and yet not change.
Going off on a tangent here, that's exactly why they both need each other even when they don't do things like meeting each other a lot: Gintoki ran where Katsura didn't and Gintoki lived on while Katsura despaired. In my mind, the values they demonstrated during their darkest times are lessons each would never learn except from the other. Katsura is also obviously very concerned about how others feel and we've seen how unconcerned he is about his own health, state etc. so for him to see his fellow people being oppressed is crushing, hence said last-ditch attempt to do something.
In the end, neither side can embody what the other stands for but they understand it well enough that they complete each other.
I can definitely understand that, after all, he is my favourite, too XD I'm really glad Gin-san helped him realise that, it was sad to see poor Katsura-san so desperate...
You really sum up their relationship perfectly! It is exactly because they complete each other that they are such good friends and comrades. Their friendship is so touching, the more I think about it, the more I love the two of them XD
That was a really well-crafted analysis of the relationship between Gintoki and Katsura that you wrote for episode 5. It's emotionally moving and touching to understand that Gintoki is responsible for saving Katsura's life by encouraging Katsura not to commit suicide.
