Episode summary:
In a belated New Year episode Gin-san is trying to find some kid to give the child a New Year’s envelope - a traditional gift of money. He encounters a lot of amusing situations, but fails to give money to anyone. Shinpachi suggests that the envelope does not have to be given to a child, a younger colleague is also a suitable recipient.
And that’s when Katsura and Elizabeth appear. Elizabeth has had an image change, even her signs look different.
Elizabeth: [Gintoki-senpai!]
Elizabeth: [Oh, it’s really Gintoki-senpai!]
Katsura: ‘Oh, Gintoki.
Gintoki does not want to consider Elisugizabeth his colleague and kicks Katsura in the head.
Gintoki: ‘And that won’t destroy the world!’
Katsura: ‘How could you forget your comrade? No matter, it’s New Year, so you should give him an envelope.’
Elizabeth: [I simply destroy.]
Gintoki: ‘That ain’t happening! He’s so obviously a fake!’
Elizabeth: [Until the beast stops howling.]
Gintoki: ‘And why are you talking like Takasugi?!’
Elizabeth: [You may complain now, but you’ll give me a New Year’s envelope in the end. That’s what makes you Gintoki-senpai!]
Gintoki: ‘I’m not giving you anything!’
Katsura: ‘Oh, that’s right.
Shinpashi and Kagura don’t really appreciate.
Episode discussion:
The more I watch Gintama, the more I am convinced that Katsura is intentionally trolling everyone XD Although he gets beaten up for that every time, but maybe it gives him some sort of moral satisfaction...
It’s his serious look that makes trolling more successful - he looks so earnest that it’s difficult to suspect him of impure intentions. I personally was fooled all the time, and considered him a well-meaning, but bumbling individual who is not adjusted to real life. But now I see that half of the time he is, in fact, fully aware of the fact that he is acting weird and simply enjoys driving people crazy.
At least this time it was definitely trolling the way he and Elizabeth made fun of Takasugi. And It was quite amusing how Elizabeth participated in the whole process, she is definitely on the same wavelength with Katsura.
Well, everyone in Gintama trolls other people, so it’s not like that is something bad. Lol, I don’t actually know where I am going with this line of thinking. So basically, he is either A level troll or really naive. Or a combination of both, depending on the situation.
On a completely unrelated note, I’m amazed every time at how Katsura keeps things in his sleeves. It must be a Japanese thing, but I personally can’t imagine how these things don’t fall out.
It was quite amusing to see those Joi training tickets, it almost looked like Katsura was printing his own money. Is he adding forgery to the list of his crimes XDD Lol, no, of course he wouldn’t. But it is interesting how his portrait was used on the tickets, it really shows that Katsura is the symbol of the Joi movement, or what is left of it. Which is no wonder, I suppose - in some moments in this episode he looked really good. I expected bishounen sparkles when he pulled out the envelopes.
Also, it appears that Joi is pretty much a non-profit organisation, if they are even prepared to give people money for taking the courses. I sure would like to know more about the contents of the courses. From the looks of it, physical and mental training is involved.
It kind of makes me happy, since there have not been so many mentions of Joi activities lately, and I was wondering whether Katsura has not given up. We also should not give up and keep the fandom alive even when the anime is on hiatus!
