I’m sorry for not updating regularly! I wish I could say I have a good reason, but I really don’t - I’m just easily distracted by all the fun things to do online...

Episode summary

The last episode of the season starts with the famous kotatsu scene, and Shinpachi is indignant that they are reusing it for the fifth time. After the opening the Yorozuya announce that they had come up with the best thing to do during the last episode - they want to apologise to all people who were offended or inconvenienced by the anime.

Gintoki and Kagura want Shinpachi to commit seppuku, but he refuses. They apologise for the preview of the Kintama arc, since that arc is naturally not happening.

The Shinsengumi show up. It leads to Kondo apologising for everything in a most embarrassing manner.

And then other characters apologise for all sorts of things they did. The Yorozuya want to apologise for vomiting in the anime all the time, but start vomiting again and cute sound effects are used to camouflage that.

More random apologies from other characters follow. But since they all fail at apologising, the person who knows best about politeness and etiquette appears!

Shinpachi: ‘What is this?’

There is a scene from the hostess club where Otae works on the screen.

Shinpachi: ‘Are you saying they should use alcohol?’

Katsura: ‘You should never answer “How old do I look?” That’s the reply most customers will use, so the escorts are sick of hearing it.”
Shinpachi: ‘Uh, did we need that explanation? This is turning into a hostess club seminar.’

Katsura: ‘It is bad manners to ask for her e-mail address or phone number at this point.’
Shinpachi: ‘We don’t need that information! And my sister already apologised first!’

Katsura drops his glass and spills the drink.

Shinpachi: ‘You finally get a chance to apologise.’
Katsura: ‘No.’

The waiter: ‘I’m very sorry!’
Shinpachi: ‘Huh? You aren’t going to apologise?

Otae: ‘Excuse me, would you like a smoke?’

Shinpachi flips out and crashes Katsura’s face into the table.

Shinpachi: ‘And it didn’t even make sense!’

Elizabeth: [That made sense!]
Shinpachi: ‘That’s the punch line?!’

Random apologies from Kaientai and Kiheitai members follow. And then we’re back in the studio where Kagura states the obvious - the episode turned into the usual random stuff, and nobody has apologised properly.

Gintoki reminds her that there have been plenty of moments when they apologised, while Katsura is photobombing.

A collection of all the moments where apologies were offered follows.

Even Katsura has had moments when he apologised!

More crazy randomness happens.

The gorilla author appears and produces a letter which Kagura reads out. It is very touching and we see all characters looking very serious.

In the end, everyone apologises but promises to stay true to themselves.

And there is a promise of returning someday, so the ending is bittersweet.

Episode analysis

It is a filler episode, so we can’t really consider the information on Katsura that we obtain here as 100% canon. However, some interesting observations still can be made.

Apparently, Katsura is considered the expert on etiquette in Gintama. And he is well aware of his status, since he calls himself refined. We have observed his perfect conduct and the good figure that he makes repeatedly, but there has been some discussion as to whether Katsura himself considers that aspect of his personality as something he should deliberately cultivate to attract more followers to the Joi cause or is it just a feature of samurai lifestyle for him.

And this episode implies that Katsura does pay attention to the whole proper behaviour thing, and he even goes as far as observing particular rules of conduct towards bar hostesses.

Which brings us to the next point - what is Katsura doing in a hostess club? Well, he used to work for hostess clubs both as Zurako and in advertising, but going to such an establishment and wasting the hard earned cash he could be using for Joi activities? And I’m sure participating in drunken revels with loose women is not something a samurai would do!

Could it be that under all that proper behaviour Katsura is actually quite a playboy O_o Haha, no, that’s definitely impossible! This was just a filler episode after all, so maybe it was only an instructional video, and he doesn’t really go to such places...

And if he does, he doesn’t actually treat waiters like that XD Although his expression and his voice were quite hilarious, when he complained about the glass.

It’s interesting that Katsura had only those two apology scenes, for a polite character, I should think he would have had more... But at least the first one was very cute, and the one from Benizakura was really cool.

And it was funny how he completely disregarded the fact that he was basically surrounded by the Shinsengumi - they are no threat to him, he is just that awesome.

It was touching to see how serious and concerned he looked when Kagura was reading the letter. It was a nice contrast to his behaviour while Gintoki was talking about how many times people had apologised. I wonder why Katsura suddenly decided to try and get into the camera spotlights, I didn’t think he was so interested in getting more attention XD

All in all, it was a very moving and at the same time hopeful last episode of the season.
