I kind of saw it as the Tribunal people trying to make Leo look stupid. I mean...he didn't even get a weapon from that forge. I think it was some sort of test. Like they saw his potential power in the area and they had to see what he would do if he was confronted with failure time and time again. Remember in the season before, he did have his 'breakdown'. I think they were trying to frustrate the hell out of him to see if he would quit or show some darker side of his personality.
I was coming here to say just this. ^ They were pushing Leo hard as hell during that first part. And then they were so happy when he manifested the dragon going "Aha, see? He is of great potential."
I have to admit I felt the same way as Katt, but I totally agree with this comment. It makes the Tribunal series less frustrating to me to look at it this way, that's for sure.
This is a common plot device. Characters go to a new school/training/whatever and the one everybody expects to ace it keeps flunking or failing at the tasks.
It isn't executed too well though in Season 5 and the Ninja Tribunal are far more "WTF?" when Leo shows his avatar animal is a dragon, than "ooooh I'm impressed" at first, or at least that's how I've seen it. It doesn't help that the Ninja Tribunal nearly always have been shown as pretty arrogant assholes. Honestly, they have been Living for that long gaining more power by the looks of it and can't handle the rise of Demon Shredder who's been kept dormant for all these years on their own? I'm sorry but I'm calling bullshit.
Season 5 although entertaining was rather flawed in this part of the storytelling. It strained to keep the excuse going that it needed the turtles and only the turtles to defeat "urk" Demon Shredder.
Just additional note, yes I am aware the TMNT looked for allies to help with the fight and had to have Karai suck the life force or whatever it was away from Demon Shredder, but it doesn't change the fact that the season relayed heavily on it that it were the TMNT who saved the day, and not, oh the People far more QUALIFIED do handle a fricking Demon
I just wanted to note that I don't hate season 5, but I do have some problems with the storytelling. I think it's entertaining enough and I liked the fact that Leo did NOT really trust Karai especially because she tried to Kill his family (I can't get the notion of some fans that he should forgive her after that. Someone try to kill my family and you are on my hate list forever).
I also Liked that they finally wrapped up Nano and some other elements that were left unanswered from earlier seasons.
