I'm no fan of Johnny Cash, nor of Country & Western music. But that last performance, moving as it may be, is an afterthought to Johnny Cash's epitaph: the video of 'Hurt' on American IV: The Man Comes Around. He was on the way out and he knew it, and performed straight to the camera, same as he always did.
The look on June Cash's face will haunt you: the calm certainty that she was going to watch her husband die. It is at that point in the film, and on that day of your life when you watch it, that you realise that you can be hurt, and perhaps even crushed, but that something will flicker and glow and relight, and always live on.
