Long time no update. I hope you all had a peaceful Christmas and got into as few family feuds as was humanly possible. That's certainly what I aimed for, anyway ( Read more... )

You've not given much to disagree with, other than perhaps the last paragraph. Yes it was convenient, yes it was restricted and yes the trial process was "unsound". Sometimes the process is what's needed, but sometimes it is the outcome which is far more important. Saddam was never going to go as quietly as an Idi Amin, or a Mengistu. He wasn't going to, nor be allowed a comfortable silent retirement in a friendly dictatorship and he could never be held in an Iraqi prison. What was the solution, Guantanamo?
The fault for the situation is easily assigned, but you can't turn back time. Saddam alive would've been far more powerful a figurehead than Saddam dead.

Well the solution would have been not to try him in the new Iraq at all, but to try him in the place that is most logical and fair and common for war criminals to be tryed - The ICC in The Hague.

I'm not sure that's the point; the idea is that he needed to be gone. What the process was isn't relevant, the situation at hand meant that it was the only way out. Do you really think that a three year trial in the Hague would result in a calm Iraq? The death of any man diminishes us all. Yes 77 people died today but 60-odd died yesterday and 80 the day before. More will die tomorrow. In these sad times, these hateful chapters, sometimes the choices have to be cold. The death of Saddam will mean that fewer people die.

Why did Saddam *have* to die? It won't mean that fewer people die at all. He wasn't the one killing people in iraq during the events of his imprisonment. Life imprisonment wouldn't have been a bad option. If anything it would demonstrate to the world that a democratic government and judicial system was being worked towards in Iraq.

I hate all that "Extreme situations demand extreme reactions" balls. It's such closure-junkie nonsense.

In these "sad times", these "hateful chapters", self-restraint and measured reaction could make the difference between turning things around and plodding on down the same old path of death, destruction and retribution.

goddamn you can rant. I have only one criticism and that very minor. 'Appalling'

The entire situation seems messed up from beginnng to .. present day anyway. Can't see an actual _end_ in sight. I didn't realise how rigged this whole trial thing was until now though. Figured they didn't really _need_ to rig it since SH was so obviously guilty of various things. It's almost like a habit or an addiction for them now... OCD? Must meddle.
