Just got home from the courthouse. Took care of one of the two tickets I got at the end of January... $140 lighter in the bank account, but whatever. The second ticket I couldn't take care of. It was a non-insured ticket... which is ironic, since I'm staring at my goddamned insurance card right now. All because the fucking cop decided to be a dick ( Read more... )

Wear something tidy and bland, probably. Not full dress-up, but not jeans and t-shirt if you can help it. Explain to the judge that you had the insurance -- bring it in and show the date -- but you found it after the officer had written the ticket, and he told you that it was okay to show it when you paid the other one.

It's possible he didn't have a clue it wasn't okay; I got a ticket once and the guy estimated the fine and the reality? Was WAY more than he said. I mentioned this, and the person on the phone said, "Yeah, they don't know what the fines are."

*offers hugs*

Yeah, my experience with this was to dress business casual. (I did have an attorney though.) And we just went in and sat down and waited. When our case was called we went up, the attorney talked to the judge (we pled guilty to mechanical failure) and that was it.

At the same time I had been given a ticket for lack of insurance, but like you I was told I could take that in and have it removed if I showed the city clerk I did have insurance at the time of the accident. So for that one I only dealt with the city clerk who once I proved that I had insurance at the time of the ticket (by brining ticket and insurance card) they removed the ticket and I only had to pay a $10 processing fee. But I never had to go to a judge on that one. My thought is it will be the same. Show your insurance card, tell your story and see if he'll toss that ticket out.

Where is this at, LS? (My stuff was all in blue springs, so LS might be a tad different.)

When I went to traffic court for a seatbelt/no lights violation (which were false) after my car accident? Granted, I was in a smaller city (Davenport, IA) but... it was nothing. It was a room full of people, they called my name eventually, I presented the tickets and told the judge it was a bunch of crap and he just nodded and signed stuff and I left. No lawyer or anything, not for small crap like mine and yours. I dressed business casual but I was about the only one there not in jeans hehe.

*snurg* Yes, life back to normal is a swell idea.

It's nothing. You basically wait in a room with a desk at one end and 16 year olds and you at the other end, until they call your name and you answer a man or woman who really doesn't think you belong here.

It'll be fine. The judge will probably laud out the cop for making you show up in the first place, and you'll leave feeling like pigs suck and that'll spur a memory of when you used to be afraid of getting busted for weed.

S'all good. 1 hour, 2 tops. Wear business casual.
