You may get a better deal if you negotiate the purchase of the new car first -- and then, a few days later, sell the dealership the old car. Depending on the salesthings (the ones at one of the dealerships in down, Dube's, were really slimy when we went car shopping there!), they may try to get your car in exchange for the price they'd sell without your car. So you could say you have a probable buyer if you decide to purchase, but you're not going to go above X, and if you get the 08 one, your "probable buyer's" purchase could fall through. Do get, in writing, what they'd give you for the car, if they come down to X and would come down to X minus Z if you threw in the old car, though...
What model car is it that you're looking at? I could dig up the Consumer Reports about new cars and see what they say about it. You might do better with what you've got. (I kept my old car for about 10 years, because it worked fine for what I wanted, and got decent gas mileage, and I hated most of the alternatives. I only switched up, really, because

I currently drive a Mitsubishi Lancer, but my options are pretty open as to what I get discounts on. Ford, Mitsu, GMC (chevys and jeeps and caddies, oh my), Chrysler, Nissan. I'm not really looking -seriously-, just kind of starting to toy with the idea again. Which scares me.
I haven't had problems with slimy salespeople before, but I generally stick to dealerships my family and close friends have dealt with. I trust their opinions and experiences, so hey. :D We'll see how I feel about car shopping when I get around to it next year-ish.
