i just deleted an unread e-mail from 2003, that was spam, and didn't show up in my inbox until yesterday. how the hell does that happen?

You can set any date you want in email headers.

They do it on purpose to get it to show up at one end or another of your mailbox so you might be more likely to open it.

I get email from 2050 and 1969 all the time.
