Rant: Some Artists...

May 12, 2006 11:24

I should use this journal as a ranting jounal while I make a new one for my new website name someday soon (after spring quarter is over). After a long lapse of not drawing with tons of school work and studying, I've finally notice things online about artists and I get easily annoyed about it. Yes there are many types of artists online, but the ( Read more... )

I agree whole heartedly with you. HOpefully the summer will bring great drawing times for you. THere are many bad artists out there that are gaining fans just because fans are atracted to one aspect but not to another. for example sex of hentai

Thanks for agreeing. I'm slightly afraid I've vented too much but tried to back it up as much as I can. Yeah... kinda wish fans were generally more open to other aspects of art.

Xan! *hugs*
I think this is very well written...and I thnk more people should def. read this. *thumbs up*
You already know my opinion on this and that I agree 110% with you on this one. The fall of an artist is when they give up, or when their heads grow too big. It's such a shame, really. They give all us hard workers a bad face too, just because of their antics. What they do for pure ego-boosting, we do for our passions, which is much, much deeper than conceit.
Anyway~ you're DEFINITELY improving. I'm really looking forward to what the future holds for us!! We're so totally going to make a name for ourselves and we're going to rock, XD *hug* keep your chin up, neechan, and keep trying! I'll always be here to help. Don't forget!

First off, you are right. Second off you don't know who i am and are probally freaked out. I just thought your comments were interesting, so I popped in. (even though its a little late) I actually only read the shonen-ai stuff, so I'm only going to talk about that, but what you're saying is so completly true. I'm pretty much obsessed with the stuff, and have even tried to draw/write some my self! Boy is it hard! I mean, I have a couple of gay friends and a married gay uncle (and his husband) that I know, and I KNEW that I wasn't exactly writing a "real" gay story. But the truth is? (the sad, sad truth?) Shonen-ai manga is NOT about gay relationships, it is written by girls (mostly) for girls' sakes only. Nice rant, but nothing will change.

And I doubt it will change but at the time I wrote the rant I felt better and moved on. I just remember reading stuff about this one gay guy that doesn't like reading shonenai manga because it doesn't appeal to his tastes but "to satisfy horny females' fantasies". His words not mine. *shrugs* I just like work that's a bit more authentic. For example, if there's a manga that's about fighting in some way and named it off as karate or kungfu (which does exist in this manner), but if you really look at it it's purely streetfighting, someone (like me) whose taken martial arts would be a bit offended for the artist/writer not bothering to look up information/research like they should. And I heard that the shonenai manga that's actually about real gay relationships (manga made in japan) are actually not that popular and is actually an underground type of thing. Which is a shame because that just makes it all the more difficult to find it and see what the writer/artist has to show about it. But that's just me. Fanservice will always ( ... )

Although the subject matter isn't my cup of tea, that IS my main beef with shounen-ai stuff. It's all completely derivative. As a creator, wouldn't it BOTHER you to not be coming up with anything new?(speaking to the bulk of shounen-ai creators) It'd bother me.

Thanks for faving my webcomic on Onlinecomics.net :). I went to look at yours but it said it was on hiatus. I followed the link here to see why, but it looks like it's scrolled off the page since then.

HOpe you can get back to it.

First off, I want to make it very clear that I am in no way attacking anything you stated above. I agree with you. I'm also going to narrow down on one aspect of your rant, perhaps unfairly. Still I felt it bubbling up inside of me and I could not keep it to myself ( ... )

XP Ooops. I am a little tired, it seems.

I have to agree agree.**
Should be: "I have to agree."

Their lack of experience makes it much easier for them to fall into stereotypical.**
Should be: "...fall into THE stereotypical."

That is true, and I'm aware of those artists. But they're still open to critique regardless of circumstance, and if they don't continue to draw after having their ego busted, they didn't have a strong enough motive to draw in the first place. The artists that overcome their downfalls are more likely to improve and contribute to the art world better than one that is baby-ed through everything with their hands being held the whole time. If I remember correctly, since this is a year old, I was primarily ranting about this one shounenai artist, that has 5+ stories, and her art and story has YET to improve. The moment someone critiqued her, her fans jumped that person and she continued to fan the fire. It was just shameful to watch. I guess I shouldn't blame just the artist, but the fans that like the work. But the consumers are the consumers, they like the formulaic stuff and that's usually guaranteed to be a hit.

Why do you not put your work up?

I'm a perfectionist. Also, my style is very symbolic and less typical manga--the fanbase that I'm shooting for would have a tough time swallowing it. It's one of those things you either hate or love at first sight, which means I have to hit spot-on for even the more adaptable fans of manga to stick around. I don't really have a good wrist for the normal manga styles; everything comes out a little stiff and scratchy.

Plus, I'm really young.

I'm just going to wait and practice a little while, until I feel more confident about what I draw and who I create. That way, I guess, I can stand criticism.
