Now way more sorted, with my icon usage policy attached!
Before We Begin
As of the writing of this resources post [July 26 2005], I create my icons using
the GIMP, an open source Free Software program similar (but not the same as) Photoshop. Any icons created before March 17, 2005 were created using
Open Canvas. If the resources below do not seem to have GIMP-version brushes/gradients/patterns, assume I used the attached "image packs" to create my own brushes.
I also warn that this list is NOT exhaustive of everything I use. This is mostly my own fault. ^^; If you see me using any image, brush, gradient, or pattern that I haven't credited, let me know and I'll add that person to this list immediately, as well as apologize profusely and do whatever else the resource-maker asks.
If you're a budding icon maker needing some resources (which I hope you are - that's why resource posts exist, after all), be sure to look into the following places as well:
icon_tutorial - the most active, most helpful comm ever. Read the FAQ, browse the memories, read tutorials - and if you still have a question, feel free to ask it.
itutorial - Smaller that
icon_tutorial, but for a reason - every single icon from a tutorial there has won an award at an icon contest of some sort. So lookit! Winning techniques!
100x100_brushes,
brushaddicts,
icongradients,
icon_extras,
gimpbrushes,
gimp_resource pstogimpbrushes - resources resources resources!
gimp_users - GIMP-specific comm - ask questions, post GIMP resources and tutorials. Photoshop and PSP have similar comms, just search for "Photoshop" or "Paint Shop Pro" on LJ.
deviantART - dA has some great GIMP resources, plus it works as a free place to host brushes and icons (but no hotlinking!)
Oh, and the memories section of this comm has a lot of good links to tutorials and references I use.
Creative Commons and Icon Usage
Kawa's icons are licensed under a
Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 License.
This means that you must comment to the post where I show my icons, and credit if you use them. Also, they shall not be redistributed (posted to other places, LJ or otherwise) without my written consent (LJ icons and e-mail count as "written".) Textless icons are not bases - they may not be used to make other works. (Ask for requests instead - I love requests.)
Image Sources
Note:
cap_it is a catchall comm; basically any series I icon has had at least a few posts on there. 'Koukaku Kidoutai' is the Japanese name for the Ghost in the Shell franchise, so I didn't label its series. Everything else is either labeled for series or self-explanitory. Any non-fandom icons probably were based off of images at
Google's Image Search or
Getty Images, both of which are your friend. :D
Oh, and if I use manga scans from RuroKen vol. 2 or GitS 1, they very well could be my own.

Resources
This is unfortunately the least "complete" part. It encompasses makers of fonts, gradients, brushes, and textures; because I have a tendancy to do impulsive downloading, I sometimes forget to update this list. I'll do my best though. Names in no particular order.
