I'm thinking the term "putting to sleep" came about from parents not wanting to tell their little kids that the animals had to die. "Well, we're killing Spot to put him out of his misery".

The best way to help is to adopt another dog.

Death is always a scary thing, regardless of whether it's a person or an animal. It hurts, it feels empty, and it can loom.

But you can't let death control you. It's the same as fearing your own death.. if you're too worried about death, you forget to live. Trying to stop caring just to avoid the hurt means you'll never be happy -- it's like not dating because you'll breakup eventually.

Fear can be a powerful thing, but you can't let it rule your life, hun. You know that, I know you do. Death is a part of that. Cry about it occasionally -- I still have a cry over my friend that died a couple years ago -- but then remember the good times and restore your faith in your own life and in living.
