history: Kawai has always been a great big puppy full of love. He grew up in a loving family, in Saitama, regularly attending large family gatherings. At these large family gatherings, Kazuki learned how to tease without hurting feelings, and generally how to be a friendly, outgoing guy. He's got two younger siblings, a brother and a sister, both of whom are good kids (even if they have no interest in baseball. Pity.) Kazu mocks them and is mocked in return, but it's all very loving. He can barely imagine a family relationship that isn't full of loving mockery.
This probably helps explain why he's been friends with Takase Juta and the Nakazawa brothers for a significant portion of his life. Roka is a little too mean, but his brother is easy to bully, which balances them out. And Junta is the Baby Bear to Kazu's Goldilocks, always juuuust riiiight. Not too mean, not too easy to bully. Still, of the group, Roka was the first one to get into baseball, and where Roka went, so followed Kazuki, Junta and Riou, like a line of little baby ducks.
It also explains why, despite being from a generically Shinto Japanese family, Kazuki ended up applying to Tosei. Not only was it a good school, and a baseball-focused school, but Roka went first, and, well, Kazuki trusted Roka's taste. It turned out that Tosei was a good school for him, and he joined the baseball team (and not only for the cute cheergirls), soon becoming the team's solid foundation. When Junta and Riou also joined, well, that just made everything even better.
personality:
Kazuki is a solid guy. He's outgoing, cheerful, and likes to tease people, but he's never mean-spirited about it. He's reliable, and doesn't really mind when people lean on him for support. Kazuki is the sort of guy you want working with little kids -- or a bunch of idiot high school jocks.
While Kazuki is a baseball freak most of the time, he tries to stay well-balanced in his interests. He studies hard, practices hard, and tries to make time for some fun too. He's also a huge flirt with girls (and occasionally with Junta), and has left a string of broken hearts among the cheergirls. He does have a tendency to get flustered, although he's quick to recover.
He's also had crushes on both Roka and Junta for a very long time, but has never said anything for fear of making all their lives way more complicated than necessary. For the most part these are relatively mild crushes-- it mostly materializes as a respect for most of the things Roka does (even the things that are probably immoral), and a desire to make sure Junta is physically well, emotionally stable, and happy. But occasionally the desire to pin Junta against the wall and kiss him breathless pops up, as do the casual fantasies involving Roka and certain items that would not look out of place in a bara manga. He's the sort of guy who shoves his feelings down if it's obviously going to destabilize his group.
strengths & weaknesses:
Kazuki is a math whiz. That isn't to say he's great at algebra or calculus or any higher maths, but basic arithmetic on the fly -- give him an amount of money to spend and he will figure out how to reach it exactly in less than a minute.
As stated above, Kazu is the sort of reliable guy who's good to have in a large group. He'll help set up events, corral the masses and generally be the person everyone expects to get stuff done. It's a lot of stress, and Kazuki's pretty good at hiding it. But when he finally breaks, he'll be extremely avoidant for a good chunk of time. After losing the match against Nishiura, for example, Kazuki did his best to avoid talking to most of the team for several weeks and didn't talk to Junta for two months.

Is this thing on?
Hi, everybody, just making sure this thing works the way it's supposed to. I think I'm the only one who's not an active member of a baseball team, so that makes me a test case! Figured I'd sign up and keep in touch with my favorite players (Hi, Riou!) and give Junta a new and better way to berate me.
Anyway, no one has to worry about talking about team strategy in front of me, since I can't exactly use it against you anymore. So feel free to talk to me about anything. I'm old and wise. Mostly old.
