Recently an artist posted tips for making "freelance life easier by saving you time and money and keeping your morale up". Her tips included (summarized):

  • Put dish soap on greasy pans first before water and rub it around
  • Throw out scrubby sponges when they smell.
  • Use vinegar for everything.
  • Buy a cheap pumice stone to scrub porcelain.

Egads. I think the best advice would be to make enough money freelancing so that you don't have to do any of these things, unless you actually want to. It is sad that the perception is automatically freelance=poor.

I agree with that, though I do try to find tips for saving or cleaning, even if it's saving time, I love those magic erasers for cleaning, and you can buy generic versions that are cheaper.

I love those too. I buy the generic/store brands. They're great for getting scuff marks off walls, shoes, my DS case, capturing unicorns... okay maybe not that last.

you should put sponges in a bowl of water and microwave them for a minute each time you use them. I'd never use pumice to clean anything, particularly porcelien which is easily scratched ( ... )

Yup yup! Also avoid making prints in weird sizes. I always hit the the discount bin for mats and frames.

Lot of stores will mark down the brown bananas because they're not as pretty. I love those!

In college I hit garage and estate sales a lot. The only thing I wouldn't get is anything I can't wash in hot water, ie couches, mattresses, etc due to bedbug concerns.
