So for those of you who don't live in CT, we have
massive flooding due to shit tons of snow in January and then a steady burst of rain the last couple days. And I, along with my older-brother-but-not-really-related-to-me (Lai) and boyfriend (Zach), live in the ground floor of an apartment complex. And by ground floor I mean it is slightly underground, but it's considered ground floor.
So last night, before bed, Zach and I notice this wet spot at our bedroom door, but we were both tired and had just taken a shower so we stared at it like :| and went to sleep because we were both massively tired.
Three hours later I'm woken up to Zach getting out of bed and promptly saying "What the fuck!" I kinda roll around because I'm not all awake yet because lol REM sleep getting interrupted generally means you have issues functioning right away. And I hear him talking with someone out in our front room. I reach down for my phone, that I keep on the ground and suddenly am like O_O because WATER. FUCKING PUDDLE OF WATER.
Instantly I'm up and the lady from across the hall is talking about turning off electricity. At first I thought it was our landlady, but no it was just our neighbor. And our apartment was flooded. Immediately I start sleepily unplugging the power strips which were on wet carpet, and picking up Zach's laptop from the ground because that's where he (and I) normally keep them. Our mattress is also on the ground.
We wake up Lai, and spend a moment going "oh shit" all together. And then I remember, "I'm not sure we have renter's insurance" which would cover the damage to any of stuff.
Proceed the freaking out. (We later found out that renter's insurance wouldn't have helped anyway because it doesn't cover floods. So IDK if that makes us feel any better or not)
I call my parents' house, and leave a not so frantic message because calls at 3:40 in the morning are never good, and they don't need to hear my sobbing. My mommy calls back and tells me that we have a place to stay with them (which we already knew) and after a few minutes we're off the phone and I'm calling our landlady. I don't care that it's 4 am and she just gave birth :\ I'm up. She can be up.
The call isn't necessarily helpful, because of course other people have called, and so she knows, but it made me feel better. She tells me there's nothing they can do until 5 or 6 am to which I'm like :| YOUR FACE WOMAN!
I proceed to leave for my parents' house to get their Escape, and to basically have a few moments to myself where I don't sit in my car and cry my eyes out, because I thought it was all my fault about the insurance and now there was a chance that Zach's laptop was damaged, and his desktop PC, and our mattress. Oh and his yugioh cards, which don't sound like a lot, but he had about $1,500 worth of cards, and I'm low balling it there, no joke. Yugioh is mad serious business, ya'll don't even know. (no seriously
he has four of the Pot of Dualities and
he has six solemn warnings... yeah) And we wouldn't even be able to get money for it because NO INSURANCE!
By the time I get back, Lai and Zach have both busted out the alcohol, because hey by that time it was 5! No matter that it was 5 am. And the flooding had gotten worse, so we were all standing in our room, staring at the massive puddle like, "this fucking sucks :| CUDDLE TIME!" Proceed cuddling on the couch, the only dry place left in the apartment.
At 6 I call the landlady back, and get put on hold for 9 minutes only to get some switchboard lady who basically logs our apartment as a problem and is like "we'll get someone out there soon"
By 6:30 I decide fuck it I can not go into work. I am tired, and miserable and there is a chance that half my classes won't even be taught. So I call my co-teacher and tell her what happened and she's like "HOLY FUCK!" like the good Catholic school teachers we are :\
At 7 we all decide to leave after Zach calls the land lady one last time and basically gets told the same thing I had been told. Me and him head over to my parents' house and basically stare at them like :| because we are so fucking tired and wrecked. My mom was staying home because the river before her work was flooded so she couldn't get to her building.
Zach and I did an inventory of damages to important things, and believe the only real damage is one binder of mid-priced cards, so maybe $120 there, and the mattress. Oh and my charger we just found out. So I needed to get a new laptop charger.
So yeah :|
For the tl;dr crowd. Flooding sucks. Water flows. But at least
these dudes didn't show up :D
So if I'm like MIA for the next week. That's why :|
