Argh.

The moment the roommates move out, it's like everyone else lost the common sense to lock the damn door. I don't want to have to worry about the door being unlocked all the time, I have more than enough on my mind. Do people really not get that most break-ins are crimes of convenience?

ETA: Literally every time I've gone out there, the door's ( Read more... )

Ugh. I am so paranoid about locking the doors. It took me forever to bring it home to Strider that we need to keep the doors locked when we're home.

You know where I work, so I can assure you that it's not just break-ins, but even worse crimes, that are crimes of convenience. Please try to point that out to them. It's not a light matter.

UGH I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

When I lived with two other girls one of them never locked the door, nor did she ever take her keys anywhere. She would get so upset when we would lock her out, and eventually she started taking her damn keys with her when we refused to go back one day to let her back in.

Yes, I second what Kerstin said. It's not safe. You can lose more than your things.

People seem to think they'll be safe if they leave the door unlocked while they're home, especially (though these guys have also been leaving it unlocked overnight and even when they leave, leaving me home alone in an unlocked house. thx guiz). It makes me want to share the article from a woman who wrote into an advice columnist talking about how her roommate never locks the door when she leaves, and one day she left, the original lady was home alone, and because the other roomie couldn't be bothered to lock the door, some guy just waltzed in, tied her up, stole their stuff and left her there. She had to lay there tied up until the roommate came home and freed her ( ... )

Ugh, my roommates do this periodically and it drives me batshit. I work part time and I tend to sleep late if I don't have to be in for shift until late afternoon, so I'll often find the door unlocked when I leave for work at like, four pm. Considering that my roommates are usually out of the house by eight in the morning... that's eight hours, four of which are generally me sleeping, that the door is unlocked.

I am grateful that we've not had a break-in yet. Or would that be walk-in?

I have the same issue with Josh - though he's getting better.
Our old apt had a lock on the knob so you didn't have to lock behind you, but this one doesnt. I've told him what scares me the most is not locking it when he goes to work. There's anywhere from a 1-3 hour gap from when he leaves to when I get up.
He does lock it now, but 0_o
