well, I want it to have its wings spread out. I want it about 3-3.5 inches tall, and about 5 inches across wing-to-wing. so fairly big, but not huge.

Haha I just whipped out a ruler to figure out what that would look like. I think that sounds like a really good size. It will give you a lot of room for detail, but you won't be one of those assholes with their whole back covered.
