Don't be scared of the large revision process. You'll soon see it's just like taking small steps to the top of the mountain. I like the Play-dough experiment. :) And I have to agree it is very hard to take something out!!
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I've also found some great blog posts by Laurie Halse Anderson and Maggie Steifvator on revision that I will share next week.
I looove looove loooove that playdough assignment. That is a great thing. I used to try to get my students (collage age) to represent their work with something visual and they resisted so hard seeing things in different ways. I am so using your idea. I love it--did I say that? I also am learning so much from this series--thank you!
My students love the Play-do, too, and it has a powerful impact on them. I can't take credit for it, though. I learned it from one of the leaders of our National Writing Project site. I have gotten so many good ideas from teaching writing from that Institute.
I wonder why it's so much harder to get rid of things than it is to accumulate them? Words, scenes, the laundry in the dryer, the stinky trash, all seem so painful to take out! Anybody know the psychology behind that?
Anyways, I really like the Play-Dough analogy. It fits perfectly.
