I am suddenly remembering all the reasons why I love this episode. Some nice healthy venting from a bunch of people who spend way too much time trying to do the mature, responsible thing and repressing to the point that it's almost painful to watch. Spike did them all a huge favour, IMO, although that was certainly not his intent.
And after him being "chipped puppy" for most of the season, it was also fun seeing the scheming coming back. It's easy to forget how intelligent and observant he is, but he managed to cause a whole lot of damage by noticing Tara playing with Willow's hair and poking at just the right things to get everybody at each others' throats.
It was brilliant. Really, season 4 is my favorite for Spike... after the Dru love & before the Buffy love (I'm not a hater...it just doesn't work for me at all). I didn't realize how much fandom "distaste" there is for this ep before I started looking. I have always counted it in my top 10 & totally agree with your assessment :)
Have to totally agree about singing!Giles. And drunk!Giles. He's not my fave character - I'm much more about the ladies - but this is one place he definitely shines.
