Costumery

I feel slightly guilty going and posting about Dragon*Con, simply because I know there are several folks on my friendslist who usually go and can't this year. But I'm working on costuming. Everyone loves costuming, or at least ogling other peoples' costuming, right?

And besides, this....is Steampunk Star Trek.

Here's the base dress. I built this out of a couple of different patterns, plus a camisole whose lace was all torn and dying, but still had plenty of life left. It's a stretchy fabric, and I used gathering and zigzag stitching to keep the seams stretchy, too. The upshot is that I can pull this on easily without having to worry about zippers or buttons. Don't worry, the camisole piece will be completely covered by the corset.

Here's the corset after I finished the preliminary sewing. The color of the gray is perfect; it looks Starfleet even without any specific identifying trim.

A close-up of the stitching. If you look closely, you can probably see a few places where I "fell off" the boning channels. It's damned hard to keep the needle on the edge of the things when I can't see them, without sewing in too close to get the boning through later.

After the bones have been inserted (James was a huge help in getting those cut; tin snips are murderous on your hands) and the binding added:

Heh, the lighting makes it look absurdly purple in this picture.

The inside; the binding will need to be finished by hand.

I'm also pondering the feasibility of Trek emblem flossing. We'll see how much time I have once I've got all the vital stuff done. The way things have been going, I think, shockingly, that I may for once not be working at the last minute to finish up!
