Surgery

So, today I went to a presentation on this lovely little device called the "Lap Band". It's a little band that they stick around the top of your stomach (so it's an operation) to sort of pinch the top so you get fuller faster. Women have reported losing about 40% of their body weight in the first 12 months, and it can be altered or even taken out ( ( Read more... )

My mother had the lap band operation after decades of struggling with her weight. My aunt did the same, but she contracted an infection after surgery and was in the hospital for weeks. Since having the surgery, my mother's been unable to digest a lot of sugar and threw up a lot adjusting to the new limit of food intake. She still can't eat certain foods because they feel too heavy on her stomach.

It seems like a simple thing, but it still is a surgery, and all surgery is major. I do think it's fully worth looking into and I wish you luck with whatever you decide! Just make sure your doctor goes over the procedure thoroughly with you.

Oh, please believe me when I say that I'm not taking this lightly like, "WOO HOO WEIGHT LOSS". That's why I'm taking months to prepare for this-- mentally, physically, dietally (is that a word? No? It is now). Etc.

Thank you for your words, I'll keep them in mind when I talk with my doctor-- and I'm glad that your aunt is okay! O_O

Oh, I do, believe me! I know how it feels to struggle mentally and physically with weight, especially when it feels like a lot of other people don't understand. My mom felt really bad about what happened to her sister though, since she recommended it, so I wanted to be sure to comment.

All the best to you, but always do your research first, kaze. I've heard horror stories and success stories from these surgeries.

If this is what you choose, then I'm behind you all the way.

As for my "thinspirations" (what a strange word. Did they give you it?) I guess it would probably be Anthy Himemiya. And that's about it... Oh, maybe that's why I'm not that worried about losing weight.

No, it's a word I picked up online.
W-Wow. XD I have so many people that inspire me in my weight loss goals, I guess ... I'm lucky? Either lucky or unlucky, I don't know.

Everyone tries to sell what they can, but remember it's not that simple. Lap Band sounds great and amazing, and actually produces great and amazing results most of the time, but you need to ask yourself if it's worth it.

Lap Bands change your physiological condition. Unlike this like liposuction, it'll directly change your body's anatomy AND functions.
It's drastic, and risky - if the doctors didn't tell you that, you should go and ASK someone who will, because it is. It's a stomach surgery after all.

A less drastic and probably less intrusive is an Intragastric Balloon, which is a silicone (I think) balloon that is put in your stomach occupies space there. It doesn't squeeze your stomach and makes you feel full as well, and by what I've heard is preferred to a Lap Band.
