"Dead Fantasy"
Chapter 2

Despite the blood dripping off the tips of her gleaming claws and the tip of his rapier, she knew it was just way too quiet for this to be over. It didn’t matter that their heeled boots were being surrounded by the life force of their former opposition, the metallic scent and death coating their tongues with every mouthful of precious oxygen as their eyes swept the chamber for anyone else. She didn’t know about him but she was certain she could feel someone watching them.

His calf length red coat brushed the legs of her half armored boots as they stood back to back, searching every corner without making themselves vulnerable. She flicked the dripping blood off her claws and unbuckled the small belts around her throat, letting her high collar fall open to expose her glistening chest and the tight black top beneath it. While the leather gave great protection for such light weight, it was a bitch in these desert-encircled ruins they had been fighting in. Her red hair may have been pulled back from her sweating face but the color-bone-length locks and her bangs still managed to slick themselves to her skin and threaten her goggle-sided sunglasses.

She heard his shoulder length hair as he turned his head to look at her over his shoulder when she looked up, her long earrings jingling with the motion. She didn’t stop of the relieved exhale that escaped her at the sight of nothing overhead.

“I don’t believe any of them could have flown.” He snarked over his shoulder, flicking the blood off his rapier with a sharp jerk of the blade before sheathing it at his waist.

“Cross paths with whom I cross paths with, and you’ll remember to look up, too.” She shot back, the blood on her claws splattering into the blood around them before they opened and retracted onto the back of the hands of her fingerless opera length leather gloves, freeing her long crimson nailed hands. She gathered her hair up off her neck and loosened another small belt under her breasts, the red vest falling open a bit farther.

“I don’t traverse taverns and slums.” He sniffed disapprovingly.

“That explains why your information is almost always a trap.” She quipped as she flicked a chunk of tissue that had attempted to lay claim to a section of her short red leather skirt. He opened his mouth to argue but she spoke again. “Anyway, let’s get out of here.”

She reached into the pack on her left thigh and pressed the middle of the silver tube she had drawn out of it. The tube expanded enough to show a digital timer and thin veins of the interior, a claw appearing out of the bottom of one end with a sharp shnk. She pressed the button by the timer again and the digital counter began to wind down with a soft beep with every decreasing number.

“Time to mosey!” She threw it up to the ceiling, the claw digging into the stone and the pair bolted for the exit to make it out before the timer reached zero.

The sand immediately stuck to the blood on their boots as they made it out into the scorching heat once more and vaulted over a fallen obelisk for cover. There was a loud beep and then a near deafening implosion that was followed by an explosion. Sand and tiny bits of rock rained down on them before they pushed themselves out from behind their cover and rush to their awaiting transport hovering hidden in a pocket of shade created by a pair of crumbling walls.

He mounted up first and brought the odd vehicle out of standby as she mounted up behind him. He grasped the controls when she put her arms around his waist and they both leaned forward as he pressed down the pedal under his boot, shooting their ride forward with a small wash of sand behind them. He tapped a few commands into the console of their ride and something shot from the front, from below the currently inactive light.

The bolt of energy struck the air and seemed to impact something with a ripple, flattening out into a large disk of tangible energy. He revved the engine higher and pressed the pedal down farther, speeding them up and easily piercing the pool of energy. It disappeared behind them with a resounding crack.

A boot crunched on the sand and debris littering their previous shelter, the coat of the boot’s owner swishing around the hidden ankle.

“…how interesting…”
