well, my friends? In August, I will have worked at the Santa Cruz Public Library for 1 year. Starting July 1st, they are taking away the position I was subbing for, making me a 25-hour/week employee again. They are also taking away all the subs at central, so my backup plan, which was to get on the subs list and pick up extra hours, is looking ( Read more... )

Once you get to the Civil War era, I recommend Team of Rivals. I'm about half way through the book but I like it so far. It starts with the fight for the republican presidential nomination and goes through the civil war, ending with Lincoln's death (I think, maybe there's more afterwards).

I really liked The Awakening. I had to read it for advanced english in 11th grade. If I had known that you hadn't read it yet, I would have made you read it years ago.

You're not happy in SC. You haven't been for a while now, I think. I say you move back to Berkeley, find a temporary job & housing (I think I might be able to help with that, I'll call you) while still applying for library positions. Then at least you'll be happy, and more financially secure. We should have burritos the next time you're up.
