Hello all. ^^ This will be my first tutorial. I had been thinking of doing one for some time. I hope you guys find it easy to understand. Feel free to ask any questions.

For this tutorial I'm using GIMP 2.6. In this tutorial I will demonstrate how to make a simple animation using text.

First off you start by opening the new window. Since this a animation using text I'll make it 172x98. It's not necessary to use the same size as me. You can always make it bigger or smaller.

If you look at the advance options there’s several options in which you can choose your background color. Your foreground and background color depend on your settings. The default settings for your foreground color is black and background color is white. So if you want them to be a different color you might want to change it.

For this tutorial I’m just going to leave it to the default settings and just click ok. This will give me a white background.

Shall we continue? Now I’m going to add a text layer with font of my choice. I picked serif italic since it’s one of my preferred fonts. I’ll go with a size 25. In this example I’ll just write welcome.

Now that we have our text layer in place I’m going to add a drop shadow. To do that you just go filters> light and shadow> drop shadow

If you don’t wish to add a drop shadow you can just skip to the step below. So now I will add a second text layer. Why? Well to do an animation it requires several layers. You have to change it slightly to see movement. In this case I’m going to change the color of the text. So I’m repeating the steps that I did with the first text layer except this I’m going to make it blue. My fav color. ^^
After adding the text I’m going to once again add a drop shadow. So now it should look like this.

You can stop here if you want but if you add more colors you can. I added 3 text layers on my example. We are almost ready to start making an animated gif. Before you can do that you’ll have to merge down the layer. If you don’t merge down the layers the drop shadow will not show up in the gif and the text layers wont have a background. So for each text layer you have make sure you merge it with a drop shadow and a white layer. You can merge down the layers just by right clicking on one of the layer. Click the option merge visible layers.

We are done merging layers and now I’m left with only 3 layers. We can now start animating our gif. When making a gif I using start by optimizing it as gif. You can do that by clicking filters> animation> Optimize (for GIF). Optimizing for a gif reduces the size slightly. I don’t really notice a difference in result when I don’t optimize it.

If you look at your layers window you can see each layer is now at 100 ms. That is the default setting but you can always change the amount of time you wish the layer to be just by double clicking on the layer and delete 100 ms to desired time you wish. Keep in mind it must be in ms. So if you feel that speed is too fast or too slow you can always change it. You can get idea how your gif looks before saving it by clicking filters> animation> playback>

A window should appear allowing you to preview your gif. When your ready to save your gif go to file> save as> extension type> gif. Click to save as animation. If you click to merge visible layers it will be one layer and there wont be any movement so make sure you click to save as animation.

After that it will ask you if you want it to loop forever. That means your gif will keep repeating itself and it will never stop.

Once your done the end result should be something like this.
